Hey guys, not new to the forums but new to 3DS flash carts. A few questions.

I don't currently have a 3DS. I would like to get a 3DS XL. I saw the thread that said I would need firmware 4.5 or less.

(1) Is this true? I really wanted the Zelda 3DS XL :(

(2) If it is true, then is the information in this thread still current?
http://gbatemp.net/threads/where-to-get-a-firmware-4-5-or-below-3ds-xl.352360/
(need serial numbers ending in SW12XXXXXX X)

(3)I had a DS flashcart. Can you still have multiple ROM's on 1 flashcart or can you only have 1 game at a time?

(4) I would like to be able to play online. If I understand correctly you cannot currently play ROMs online, only original retail games? Playing online wouldn't be a big deal for me.

(5) Which flashcart would you recommend? I read the flashcart comparison chart and they all seem the same?
1. Yes, you need a 3DS or 3DS XL with firmware version 4.1 to 4.5 to use any flash cart currently.

2. Yes, up to date with all the information we have so far.

3. Any 3DS flash cart also comes with a DS flash cart in order to exploit DS mode. With DS flash carts, you can play with as many ROMs on one card as you like (even on 3DS consoles). With the 3DS flash cart, it's one ROM per microSD card currently, with one exception (will explain in 5).

4. Yes, only retail cartridges can be played online currently using sysNAND or emuNAND (flash cart).

5. Gateway 3DS is the only team doing completely original work, and it's the only flash cart that won't brick your system right now. OTOH, it's speculated that Gateway is the reason why other flash carts are bricking consoles, as it's their modified launcher which is being used with those other flash carts. So I'd recommend either buying a Gateway or holding off buying any flash cart altogether for the moment, and wait for more information to come in/be confirmed.

Your other option is the MT card, which does have multirom on one microSD card, even in 3DS mode. They are also using a modified Gateway launcher, but it's based on an older version and is safe right now. However, the future of their updates is unclear, and their ROM compatibility is pretty poor currently.

Hey guys,

because of bricking news (I cant follow the topics because thousands of posts there..) I want to make sure, that I dont get any problems with my 3dsxl (4.4.10) or my gw-card. I dont have EMUNAND, I dont use regionpatches or anything thats NOT from GW-Team.

As far as I know Gateways-Launcher.dat bricks console if Hash (MD5 or SHA) is different to the original file. People now say, that if there are read/write errors on the 3ds-SD-card the hash of the launcher.dat could change and brick your console EVEN if you use all original files and the original gateway card. Right?

So I dont want to mess up my 3ds, should I use 1.2 instead of 2.02b now? Where can I get 1.2 and is it confirmed, that there are no bricking-functions in 1.2? Otherwise I would have to check the md5 of the 1.2s-launcher.dat any hash codes posted here?

Whats with my 2.02b-save (for example Fire Emblem), can I use that on 1.2? The only real question I have, how can I protect from GW-bricking-methods and checks?

Thank you guys ;-)!

I have an interesting question. MT-card is saying everywhere:"Updatable USB functions, built in CPU" I see the mini slot for connecting on the card, but there is no USB cable included in the package, am I right?! When you buy it, there are only 2 cards, so will they include it in future packages or you have to buy it somewhere else?

No, there is no chance of you bricking while using official hardware and firmware from Gateway. If there's any SD card corruption or the initial MD5 check fails, you'll simply get a black screen requiring you to restart your 3DS, the launcher simply will not boot. The only way a brick can occur is if that initial check is bypassed or recoded via a modified or patched version of GW's launcher.

I think everybody is in the dark on that right now. Could just be one of several features they promised that are missing from the initial release.

Thanks for your quick reply. So whats with the guys that say, they have used original firmware + original gw-card? All liars? R4i-Fanboys? I mean, 1-2 Weeks ago nobody had any problems with bluescreens or hardwarefailures .. Now there are bricking some r4i and other clones .. and suddelny there are a few gw-users that report bricks too :/ ?

There have been a couple reports of bricking from GW3DS users, but those were for different reasons. Namely, messing around with the settings or data management in emuNAND. Reports of bricking using only official GW3DS hardware/firmware due to a failed MD5/hash check should be dismissed as false for the time being (I believe there has only been one).

hard to tell really. And sadly it's impossible to proof that a user didn't run a non official launcher.dat on a bricked 3DS.

But for the time being i think (as in having a gut feeling) that the probability for bricking running unmodified GW is in the same order of magnitude as having a 3DS brick on its own without any exploiting and flashkarts

Now, if people are reporting bricks from having messed around in the System Settings in emuNAND, does anybody know if Parental Controls work there?

I did parentalcontrol and disallowed spotpass, but "Spotpass-Data" under mgmt is not locked. It opens up without entering the code ... I checked that before I had gw-flashcard. I dont want to recheck it again ^^

As far as I know Gateways-Launcher.dat bricks console if Hash (MD5 or SHA) is different to the original file.
No, it's not the Launcher.dat file MD5 checking procedure which brick the consoles.

There are different checks in place.

Launcher.dat check : If the file is corrupted, the program doesn't run. that's all. There's no brick done here! This check can be patched and bypass.
ARM9 : Once the launcher.dat is running correctly, it's checking the internal console's memory. This is what is checked. If the "patches" are not the expected ones (for example clones modifying the pictures, names, etc.), it will brick the console. I think Normmatt patched this check in his region free mod.
Other : Once the launcher.dat is running, There are other checks in place, which normmatt didn't see, that's why it still bricked consoles.

Hi everybody! I'm pretty much a newb when it comes to 3DS hack so I guess I'm at the right place to ask a stupid question.

I've ordered a gateway and should get it in the next couple of weeks but I've read everywhere that it doesn't support the online functions of the games so I'm planning on playing pokemon with the original cartridge instead of a backup. I've read a bunch of topics but I'm getting more confused by the minute. From what I understand, I need to wait for my gateway and use Emunand to update the system and be able to play pokemon without physically updating my firmware and loosing my 4.5. Where i'm getting confused is if then I'm supposed to boot on gateway mode or on classic mode. I'm a bit confused what the classic mode is for and if it sees the firmware as the updated GW version or at the 4.5 version. In any case, if I use the real cartridge, I'll be able to access all the online gameplay, right ?

I'll appreciate if someone can explain this to me, thanks in advance for your time :3

The difference between classic and gateway mode is that in classic you can play retail games (but no roms), while in gateway mode you can play roms (but no retail games).

If you happen to already have a ds-mode flashcart that works on the 3DS (r4i, supercard DSTWO, whatever) you can already install the exploit (just follow the tutorial or the manual) and play pokemon.

In light of recent events I'm ditching my R4 3DS deluxe. I'm currently trying to remove the DS profile hack from my 3DS. I tried putting in an R4i that I have lying around and playing it, but it just says an error has occurred. I'm guessing I need an original DS cart to remove it?

Ok I got a 3DS XL with the right serial number. What should I do to make sure that I don't accidentally update the firmware? Should I wait to use it until my flashcart comes in?

Could someone please help me with a small explanation of the bricking scandal? So much information is scattered across so many different threads that it's almost impossible to follow.
