couldnt you just download a crappy eshop demo and kill that.....probs have to freeze the "play counter" though XD

also is ther actually an app behind it or is it just change text, change icon....still the same app

No, I got it, just kill the "Health and Safety" app.
Genius!

But in all seriousness, this is very very exciting news. If we could execute code directly from the internal SD card, without the need for any extra hardware that would be amazing. It would kill the 3ds flashcard industry.

A Homebrew Channel should kill the flashcard industry? I'm sure that Smea knows how to stop piracy for a long time.

except smea is dead set against backup loaders and would no doubt go out of his way to block it as best he can....so probs not unless someone else finds a way

Dont you know protections are made so they can be bypassed, I mean if smea really wants to stop piracy he'll have to work like hell on this, I think it'd be useless and a wasted effort, better work on homebrews, making the hack better and finding new exploits than working on what Nintendo should do...

You can argue about that with smea. :P
But I'm sure that he doesn't want to get a visit from Nintendos lawyers.

hence why he won't/cant release anything...nintendo would be gunning for him even if its not him releasing the backup loader

I know Smealums stance on piracy, and understand that he probably wont release anything that allows people to play ROMs on their softmodded 3DS's. But like the homebrew channel for the Wii, someone else will figure out the piracy aspect of it eventually.

Will softmods stop piracy? Absolutely not.
Would it hurt the flashcard makers? Most definitely.

I dont think omiting to implement an AP feature on some public custom console modding is wrong in the eyes of the french law, hacking is not illegal and what people do of their hacked devices is their matters they can do illegal stuffs with it but smea cant be responsible for this if he doesn't implement warez features to his work...

piracy protection is stupid!if someone wants to pirate a game he will....and i really dont know how he will make that protection!cause a hombrew channel itself is a way to make rom loaders!

well at some point he talked about restricting the power of execution of homebrews so they could not be used to patch the securities set by Nintendo but that'd require heavy work afaik, and that'd be a total waste of time...

How come Gateway isn't being gunned down by Nintendo? Do they live underground past hundreds of firewalls (Like The Pirate Bay)?

They're good at hiding, nobody really knows where do these guys come from, some people suspect them to be a former hacking device team from another console but thats the only thing we really know about them...

It is software based, but only works on 4.1-4.5, he has his own version of emuNAND though, he calls it redNAND.
I personally believe that if somebody finds an exploit for FWs higher than 4.5 he'll be the one to find it

I was on 4.5 for the longest time. I didn't play my 3DS and I remember reading stuff here saying "don't update to 5.0 because you will miss out on the possible exploits"

I regret it now... i didnt think there would be anything exploits, and look now... This and gateway/other 3DS carts

Right, Smea's personal info is very easy to find, hes just a kid that live in France and is very easy to track down. I am sure Nintendo is probably monitoring him in some form, it would be as trivial as having one of their techs subscribe to GBAtemp and his Twitter feed.

Can the same be said for anyone involved in the developement and production of any flashcard/backup device? I would love to see an investigative documentary where someone travels to hong kong and tracks these people and factories down, but currently they are all mystery-men as far as we know.

That'd sure be interesting ^_^

About the homebrew thingy I think there's still a ton of work to achieve on the 3DS to have homebrew possibilities just like on the PSP or the DS, I'd say if anyone has the hability to code and compile something which would kinda fully exploit the 3ds hardware (lets say a Doom or Quake port) by the end of the year it'd be damn impressive...

I would be happy with just a Hello World!, which this post essentially is. I understand the difficulties of creating software for a system you have to reverse engineer everything for, it will take time. The prospects of a Wii-like homebrew channel system just gives me a huge nerdboner though.
