So, let me understand: when we have the 2.0 update is it safe enough to update to latest fw or still better to wait for a possible "stronger" exploit (smealum's cfw ?) exclusive to fw 4.5? Or it's useless to wait because you still have a 4.5 backup on the SD that you can use whenever you want?
Also if i'm correct, this means people can buy a legitimate Pokemon X/Y and play it in normal mode, then can return to fw 4.5 for other things ...

P.S. some people still complain no fw 5 & 6 support. While you are seeing they are doing almost everything for the current one with appearent easiness, you must accept that finding a new exploit on higher firmwares is a total different thing, much more difficult (and luck-dependent).

Stop relying your hopes on hackers that are not close of actually releasing something. Gateway had made a great job with this update and to answer your first question: You do a backup of your NAND because that back up is actually being used as an emulated NAND (EmuNAND), so, with that backup stored on your SD card, anytime you enter on GW Modo, the system will load with the NAND stored on the SD, so you can safely update because it will update only that fake NAND. Gateway CANNOT work if you update to 6.3, however it will work on 6.3 only via EmuNAND and of course, if you already updated your EmuNAND.

I'm going to give a shot at explaining this for people.

You've got a 3DS system on 4.1-4.5. Go into the Gateway 3DS' GUI and dump your NAND. It dumps the NAND to the 3DS' SD card. (Not the GW3DS' microSD card.) Next you go back into the GW3DS' GUI and select the option to prepare the NAND image. Preparing it basically means flashing it to the 3DS' SD card. When it's done being flashed you go back into the GW3DS GUI's and select the boot into Gateway mode option. The system reads the NAND image flashed to the 3DS' SD card and not the actual 3DS' NAND. This means when you update the firmware you're updating the one on the 3DS' SD card and not the 3DS'.

We don't know anything else in terms of it supporting system transfers, retail games working on the emulated 6.3 firmware, etc.

WIP means "Work in Progress" as in they're working on getting Pokemon to work.

People above 4.5 this update means nothing to you and it shouldn't be taken that it allows support for >4.5 firmwares.

Nor do we know if online gameplay works on this new update. We'll have to see.

Hypothetical question: Why the hell should I be grateful for the things that a product can do if some people like us are unable to use said product? Or rather, why should we even fathom to support said product and the people responsible for it?

Who is saying you should be grateful?
If it won't work for you, just move on.

In addition, unless someone finds a new exploit, even any homebrew released in the future will also be useless for you.

I GUESS you will be able to do so (and I hope it too), however I think they will not work after you return to the original 4.5 on the original 3DS NAND.

I would love to clone my friend's downloaded games and then return them with my downloaded games for them. Sharing FTW  (however, I'm not sure how the System Transfer works...)

Yes, because an already NAND backup will be on FW 4.5.0, after booting the emulated NAND (the one created on the SD CARD) it's obvious you will need to update the FW to access the E-shop and maybe even more online capabilities. SNEEK on the Wii it's a good example of running NAND emulation through SD, I guess not the same as with 3DS, but close to the idea. The gateway team are gaining my respect, this is a fantastic feature for all of us who are planning on getting a GW flashcard.

Wondering if this SD card preparation step (is it an actual format?) would delete any already bought eshop games... That would suck.

P.S. Hope they will make some kind of indicator to be able to see whether you are booted into the emulated nand or not. For people without soldering skills it would suck to have upgraded their actual nand to 6.3 instead of the emulated one.

The most important question for me is: Can you play retail games that require 6.x with your emulated NAND? I'm not really interested in buying a Gateway. But I own a Supercard DS2. So, might it be possible to run Gateway installer with my Supercard DS2 (technically it should be same as running it with the blue Gateway Card)? Because, if this is indeed possible, I could backup my NAND, emulate it and play my retail Zelda: ALBW in november without needing to buy a Gateway.

This is really great..... GW delivers more then I ever expected. After regionfree and firmware spoofing now EMUnand!

What I don't understand is people bashing the GW team for not making the card 5.x or higher compatible. If there is no exploit well.... then it wil never happen...get over it!
GW team doesn't owe you anything. We -almost- all knew the limitations of the GW and I also expect that in the near future even firmware spoofing won't be enough (games needing some new api-functions in the 7.x firmware).

Still IMHO GW team -as makers of a first generation 3DS card- is doing a great job.

Let's be realistic here. If you're too poor to swap a 6.3 3DS with a 4.5 3DS then you don't have $80 to spend on a Gateway. Feel free to spend your imaginary money somewhere else.

Also, one can only hope you leave this thread. Spamming about imaginary 4.5 elitists in a thread where people are discussing real technical details on the new Gateway firmware is annoying at best, and irritating at worst.

Wonder why your ass isn't banned yet.

Hypothetical question: Why the hell should I be grateful for the things that a product can do if some people like us are unable to use said product? Or rather, why should we even fathom to support said product and the people responsible for it?

Now people who use this new version will "update" their firmware to 6.3 and brag about it to others who updated to the real 6.3 :creep:

Let's see what the GW does so far....

Dumped ROMs
Dumped and emulated Nand
Firmware spoofing
eShop access on hacked firmware
Essentially running unsigned code on 3DS mode

Whoop-dee-shit. Doesn't mean a thing to us. I'll spend the $80 on something else :creep:

Didn't you know that exploits grow on trees? At least the computer-illiterate people think so.

the_randomizer it would be really nice if you could please stop posting, thanks!

randomxiii He seems to go on these autist fits quite often. I'm also surprised he has not been banned for shitposting.

Otherwise, I'm quite happy with this development. We can now run other firmwares on our 3DS kind of like DevHook or the Undiluted Platinum chip was on the PSP. Would be really cool if the 3DS NAND dump from the Gateway was decrypted for playing with to see how the system reacts to patching. I just want to tinker with it myself.

Unfortunate that people that didn't have enough forethought to not update and be a bit patient, but that seems to be just life :)

we understand you are not on 4.5 firmware, but crying about how someone else must find a way to make the exploit work is a bit childish.

at the end of the day it's your 3DS and you updated the device for whatever reason, you are not the only person who has done this to their 3DS.

man up and deal with it, wait and see what happens.............................sudeki300

It's important for society to be healthy and educated. I agree it's not easy for the average American, let alone the ones below that average. Free / cheaper healthcare is much more important I think than free university education.
Of course like @mthrnite said, why not both. But I doubt both will get solved at once, and surely healthcare is top priority.
