Hacking Clarification regarding Gateway 3DS

Ok, I so I understand that each time I boot my 3DS, I have to go to Settings > Profile > DS mode. However, do I need to have the blue Gateway card in my 3DS when doing this, or after set up can I do this step with the red card in place?

Secondly, do I have to do anything special when shutting it down my system?

You can do the DS Profile exploit with the red Gateway card in the cartridge slot, I actually would recommend you to do so. You have to do this exploit every time you stop seeing the icon of your current inserted ROM; this occurs when you shut down your 3DS, you enter in 3DS settings.

You'll need to use the blue cart exploit again when you use anything related to a DS function, like playing a DS physical game and even downloaded DSi games.
