Do you need BC/MIOS in order to use GC controllers though?

And obviously on the new crap Wiis/Wii Mini you can't use GC anything ;)

I am also curious about the LAN adapter.

Also, Brawl installs the BC/MIOS stuff? Why? It's not like Brawl is using GameCube mode o_O
Also, wouldn't the newer Wiis that don't play GameCube games lack those as well? I'm curious as I have never used one.

Some parts of this are unkown to me either, but here is what i know.
If a game is bundled with an update, it always contains a whole system update, for all IOS, system titles and of course MIOS/BC.
Most games would theoretically run on firmwares like 2.x. They probably just bundled the games with complete/unneeded updates to block homebrew.
As newer Wiis without GC-compatibility are able to update normally, they have to contain MIOS and BC, because a Wii always does a complete update. It can't differ between needed and unneeded titeles, it just updates everything availabe online/on disc. The new Wiis even contain the memory card menu, which is of course completely useless.

I don't own a Wii mini but it seems like it blocks updates of any kind. It can't go online and disc updates are also blocked. Maybe even the same way like homebrew does, who knows.
So it was no problem for Nintendo to not include MIOS/BC, as it never checks for an update.
This leads to the conclusion that Nintendo didn't plan to update the Wii anymore, because a Wii mini could never get that. Maybe that's clear anyway today, but still interesting in my opinion. :p
They also changed the system settings on the mini. It doens't contain an internet option at all. So no way to connect with LAN adapter.

Hm, interesting. I'd be more curious if it's possible to take the motherboard from a non-GC Wii and make it fit into the Wii Mini's chassis. I actually wanted to try that myself, but figured it wasn't worth wasting the money on. Since it would be cool to have a Wii Mini that actually works :P

the problem is the drive has a different connector so even if you could fit it in, unless you put it in pre-hacked and planned to do ONLY USB loading, there'd be no way to connect the drive to actually play a game

EDIT : a WODE or WiiKey Fusion might do the trick, too

And there isn't a way to convert the connectors? I'm sure it can't be too hard to do, if we got someone good with hardware to look at how the two work and figure out what pins go to what.

The only way to hack a wii mini atm would be to get an sd slot installed on one. Then you could run smash stack. All other disc exploits will not work, since the system menu will not let you copy the save file. The wii recovery disc also will not work, even if you had a wode installed to load it, the wii will not update so ios16 will not install and the disc will not load.

I wonder what would happen if you moved an update partition to the data partition and loaded it with a wode. Would it run the update? Possibly from the system menu or via disc swap. If you could get get the update from the recovery disc to install you would have something to work with. I don't think that would work, but worth a test.

i need to get my hands on one of these if i can find one cheap enough. deff want to take a crack at it and see what i can do.

im more rgh/jtags on xbox's and ps3 modding and downgrading but im intrigued with this lol. where is the nand key stored on the wii's? is it like the 360 and embedded into the cpu?

how about SD Card install points ?

The wii mini is still not available in stores here in the US. While looking at some of the very few pics of the motherboard that I have found online, it looks like there is the ability to solder up an SD connector and possibly run smash stack. I've also noticed that it does have a NAND chip on it, although I can't find decent enough pics to know it's model number. I'd love to try to fuck around with one of these and see what I can find out about it.

Would someone be willing to send me theirs for me to fuck around with for a few weeks? Or would it be worth asking to do a TYM raffle type thing again?

Let me know what you think.

Ill be more then happy to send mine to you let me know how you want to do this.

Sorry for Bumping, but it seems that the Wii Mini Nand somehow has tickets named 00000100.tik and 00000101.tik.
Aren't they BC and MIOS?

like it matters the damn thing isn't moddable

I know thw Wii Mini is a crippled version of the original Wii, but I quite like its case design and wondered if anything ever came of this? Did anyone trace the SD slot solder points and attempt to add one to the Wii Mini? Would be interesting to know if Smash Stack could work.
