I have had my wii hacked for quite a while now/3 years. I used to play on my hdd with an enclosure on it but that broke so started playing on some spare usbs i have, later on i bought myself another hdd enclosure using the same hard drive but for some reason CFG and Usb loader gx dont read it, wiiflow happens to read it but games wont boot, gives black screen, and my wad manager, pimp my wii gives me an error when i try to install wads, can not mount usb mass storage device, ERROR! (ret = -2), something like that. tried both fat32 format and wbfs, i have the latest d2x ios 56 and 57, please help

maybe you can open the case up and have a look at the specifics.. you just need to unscrew the outer screws, leave the drive mounted to the board inside, and just read the top sticker

Your problem is
New
it is a unbranded ebay ide 3.5" enclosure,

I've used a few different WD External drive but they were all brand WD drives, using WD IDE --> USB drivers in their converter boards.
The compatibility list has a section for using enclosures, usb enclosures , when using an enclosure it is the brand of enclosure and NOT the brand of drive you use that makes a difference.

edit to add...
your poll is flawed because because you didn't know the answer to your question....
next time just ask the question.

Are you sure the HDD is still working properly? It might have broken along with the old enclosure. It could seemingly work fine but then when you try to use it a bit, it hiccups and shits brix.

It has to do with the chip in the USB converter, if you look at that list not all the branded ones work either WD, Seagate, and a few other had some drives that failed also.

I had a 16GB PNY USB drive that would work but any SanDisk Cruzer I've ever tried was fine...

If you got ModMii and used it build the d2x v10beta52 cIOS it may work. It is a beta version but:
[ d2x v10 ]

- Added support for Virtual Wii bases 56/57/58.
- Reverted to r43, i.e. last v8 revision. Also ported some useful fixes and
features from r49, i.e. last v9 revision, especially:
* Fixed an EHCI issue in ReadCapacity that prevented certain usb devices from
working (tnx to digicroxx).
* Fixed an EHCI issue in GetDescriptors that prevented certain usb devices
from working (tnx to digicroxx).
* Removed from ciosmaps.xml the patch to skip the process id check inside
os_software_IRQ(4).
* Fixed content id for bases 60/70/80 in ciosmaps.xml (tnx to dragbe).
* Added maked2x.sh to build the cios on Linux (tnx to r-win).
* Added stripios source to svn.
* Removed the easter egg introduced by Waninkoko in cios rev20.
* Minor changes and code clean up.

how come wiiflow reads it though?
Because Wiiflow has all the titles stored in the cache, which is on the SD card.
So to speed things up, it gets all the information from the SD card and only attempts to initialize the USB device when booting a game or manually reloading the cache, at which point it gives you a black screen because like many others have told you, your USB drive is not compatible.
Always check the compatibility chart first ( already pointed out ) and get a new one.
