I just received my Gateway in the mail today. My 3ds XL is on Ver. 4.4.0-10U. I have the retail game of Animal Crossing, Donkey Kong & Luigi's Mansion, which has the 4.5 update. Is one game preferred over the other for the update, or it doesn't matter. Is it best to stay on Ver. 4.4 or update to 4.5?

There's no reason not to update to 4.5. You will be required to update to 4.5 if you want to play your retail games that have 4.5 anyway.

I'd say update to 4.5.
You got nothing to lose (and hardly anything to gain) since that's the last FW that still contains the firmware bug or whatever it is called.

Thank you & Good point, I guess I was so excited for the Gateway to FINALLY arrive that I didn't think that thru LOL

I'm on 4.4 and every game I've tried has run perfectly with the Gateway card, including Luigis Mansion 2 which I believe is a 5.1 game.

I went ahead & updated to 4.5 because I want to be able to play Animal Crossing. My only question now is would I be able to play co-op with my wife on games like New Super Mario Bros 2. In the review I saw that Local Online is enabled on the 3ds, how can I do this but make sure the 3ds doesn't update to a newer firmware?

I think you have an option to disable automatic updates, either that or when it asks you to accept some terms and conditions about something you don't know, just don't accept, cuz that might be for the update itself.

There is no option that blocks updates in particular, you just need to be careful to not let the 3DS download an update in the first place. DO not take the 3DS online in 3DS-mode, turn streetpass off, spotpass off, turn off any automatic download/share settings, etc.

Oh ok, I'll make sure not to take the 3ds online in anyway. Thank you.
Separate issue how can I run DS games on the blue card, do I need another micro sd card to put the games on or can I put them on the same sd card with the GW installer?

The installer is literally just a .nds file and runs like any other, so yes, just put all your .nds files on the same SD card.

I'm also on 4.4 but I'm sticking with it. If there's no actual benefits (apart from retail 4.5), all you're depriving yourself of is the choice. It would suck if a homebrew exploit was patched on 4.5+.

There's no reason not to update to 4.5 from 4.4. There's very little difference between the two, and staying on 4.4 means one can't play those retail games mentioned above. 4.4 and 4.5 make use of the same exploit.

Should I put the .nds game files on the root of the sd card or put them in a folder? I'm sorry if that's a very noob question but the Gateway is my 1st ever flashcard LOL

Doesn't matter. You can use folders if you want.

When I insert the sd card into my computer to put on .nds games, it's saying that I have to format the drive. Do I have to do this every time I want to add a game? reformat the card, put back on the files on the gateway blue card folder & then the games?

Uh, no, you should only format it once, as FAT32. Copy the Gateway files over and whatever other DS ROMs you have and you're done. The red card's microSD is the only one that should be asking you to reformat, since you're imaging it with 3DS ROMs each time and therefore it doesn't have a PC-readable filesystem.

Or wait, you're not trying to use the same microSD for both Gateway carts, are you? If so, well, I guess you can do that, but it would be pretty annoying to have to keep formatting every time you want to play a DS game or run the Gateway installer.

I have 2 sd cards. When I first set up the gateway I formatted my 8gb micro sd to Fat32 & put the Blue card files in there. I use a 16gb for the Red card. I didn't know that I needed to put the ds games with the Blue card files. So I guess I'll reformat it & put the blue card files on as well as the ds games in a DS Games folder.
I didn't want to use 1 SD card for everything because you have to reformat the card every time you want to switch out a 3ds game with a different one. So for me it made a bit more sense to have 1 card for DS Games & 1 Card for 3ds Games, until I get more sd cards or Gateway releases a multi-game update
