There hasn't been any custom firmware since 3.55. Are they even still working on it? I got a slim ps3 about a year ago. Really all I want to do is be able to play PS2 backups from a hard drive.

I believe the teams, (Cobra, 3key- however you spell it) are making things to work with every PS3. I think depending on the system model, even now, it may require soldering. Also, I think 3k3y said theirs will be like below 70 bucks, so that's good!

There ARE CFW beyond 3.55. Newest one are Rebug 4.46.1 and Rogero 4.46. You have to downgrade to 3.55 first (if you are on 3.56+ OFW), then you can install them.

However, if your PS3 model is 250x (some), 300x, and 400x, you have no means to downgrade at all (I doubt there ever will be).

Cobra and 3k3y have nothing to do with CFW development. CFW is NOT ODE.

Dont act condescending. With those, youcan do the same things as a cfw.

I just looked up 3k3y. It sounds incredible. But let me ask just to make sure I'm understanding this right. If I buy this I'll be able to play all of my PS1, PS2, PS3, games on my slim 300x model PS3 system through a hard drive?

Not PS2. Since it is ODE it means it is emulating Bluray drive, that's all (as if you are putting legit disc into PS3 and play it in legit way). You can only play PS2 game on older FAT.

Aww too bad. It seems like there's no way for me to preserve my old PS2 games. So when my PS2 dies, that's it. I mean unless I buy another one used. :/

PS2 is dirt cheap, plus PCSX2 is quite matured at this point.

That's true. It's just that I've become spoiled after modding my Wii U. It can play nes, snes, genesis, N64, gamecube, gba, wii, games all from an external hard drive. I wanted to do that on my playstation games too. Kinda like this:

But of course I can't do that since my PS3 is the 300x model. It can't be downgraded. Sigh.

Also my computer isn't strong enough to run pcsx2.

Without the 4.XX Private keys hacking any model over 3.7X+ Firmware is impossible.
The only thing you can do to play pirated games over 3.7X Firmware is to either get 3k3y or Cobra ODE but you will have to solder your PS3 in order to do that.(Which I don't recommend at all)
I am guessing that a hack will appear once the PS4 will get released :)

newest version of 3k3y "ripp3r" software allows you to convert PSN pkgs to iso to be run from external usb/hdd (compatibility is very hit and miss atm but i'm sure will improve)
it's possible that this could be applicable to ps2 classics titles in the future for those of us on a fw above 3.55 that can't or won't downgrade...

Currently my system is on 4.25 firmware. :( Also, why is a hack more likely to appear after the PS4 is released?
Because people don't want their hacks patched, and will historically hold onto hacks for a while until a system isn't getting updates anymore, then release them.

I don't think the PSP has seen an official firmware update in well over a year. Safe to say that the system is dead. :/ It's a bummer too, because it still has so much emulator potential left in it, if some programmers were just vested enough to code new emulators from scratch, instead of porting PC emulators to the device... The reason DraStic for Android works so well is because it was written for ARM, not x86-ported-to-ARM like Desmume was for the Wii.

Even at only 333MHz, I'm sure if written correctly, a decent N64 emulator could surpass the current offerings for the PSP, and get Goldeneye playable at a decent framerate. GBA is pretty-well taken care of by the PSP, as well as NES, SNES, Genesis, and everything below them. The Wii is another great machine with alot of life still left in it. It's already fully blown wide open for people to program for, and is still a powerful little machine for emulators and homebrew games. One major problem I still see though is people porting Gamecube emulators and homebrew instead of coding them from scratch to run natively... Which is understandable, it takes alot of time to do it the long way, but in the end you end up with much more efficient running code. It is a shame that there aren't more gifted, and invested programmers to code for these systems.

I don't feel the Wii has lived up to even half of it's full potential, especially with what Nintendo was touting about it at launch when I bought my system. The Youtube channel should have come with the Wii on Launch day. It's not even good at keeping a stream going, it just drops the stream whenever it feels like it, and gives you a stupid error, instead of buffering and resuming playback. WiiMC does a better job with watching Youtube content. And if somebody were to re-code the codec libraries for the Wii, 720i/p playback wouldn't lag like a bitch. But since it's just a Linux-ported library, that's all we got.

Nintendo's online play for the Wii should have been a lot more in-depth with a Profile and Account, like the other systems do. And being able to sync the DS/3DS to the system and play on your TV wirelessly seems like a no-brainer, but I don't know why the system devs won't do it. The Remote Play for the PSP/PSVita on PS3 thing is just downright god-awful to setup and use... Nintendo COULD make it a simple process. The bottom screen could be emulated on the Wii U controller, with the top 3DS screen displayed on the HDTV. That would be some epic gaming right there.

I know I went completely off-topic, but I'm just tired of seeing consoles not live up to their hype and full potential, that's all I'm saying. </rant>
