I have a 3ds that I have not used in awhile, and still has version 3.0.0-5U on it.

Is there a method to change the firmware to some arbitrary version? or at least to upgrade to some greater version by faking the server?

If so, then what version should I be at if I want to try this new gateway device?

Thanks

Go there and type 4.5 USA in the search box. Then play one of games listed (retail cart) to update.

I do not have any newer retail carts....

If I get a gateway, can I then use that as the cartridge to do the update with?

From what I've heard yes. But it will be safer to use a retail cartridge. Simply because the gateway might freeze or something weird happening, we don't want people accidentally bricking their 3ds's ;)

It's recommend that if your 3DS is lower than 4.5 that you find a retail game with the 4.5 update, and update that way. The GW3DS team has recommended not updating to 4.5 using the GW3DS.
You can, but it's not recommended updating with a backed up game.

Edit: You can't use a backup up game anyways because your firmware is too low for Gateway to work.Thx Devin.

Use one of these retail games:
Luigis Mansion - Dark Moon
LEGO City Undercover - The Chase Begins
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon - Gates to Infinity
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D

GW3DS only functions on 4.1-4.5 FYI.

You can do what I did to update my 3DS; sign up for a free Gamefly trial, and just rent a game or two. Plus, you have a month to play whatever you rent.

Go to their website, click on the controller in the upper right corner and use the code online. The 30 day free trial is on the bottom of the next page. As long as you cancel within the 30 days, you shouldn't be charged.

I think Gamestop has a 7 day return policy on used games so he can just buy a game, update, and get his money back. Its faster, but might be more hassle that the Gamefly method.

Oh for god sakes man just buy a game you like that has 4.5 update on it......lol. I like the creativeness of people working the gamefly or gatestop stuff but for the love of jesus you should have to own one game before getting the keys to the gateway kingdom......BTW SMT 4 is also 4.5 which may have been one of the last games to distribute with 4.5 as it came out July 17th. Considering that game hasn't been dumped it might be a good one to get if you want to play it.

ok, I went and bought a game (Epic Mickey, because I am a Disney fan, almost went with Professor Layton because I liked the DS version). 4.1, but 4.anything should be fine. Anyways, I have a few 3ds games, just no 4.x versions, just older games from when the 3ds first came out.

I'll update my 3ds when I get home.

Thanks

you should turn your wifi off when you do your update, just to prevent any accidents from happening. (you probably already thought of this, but figured i'd toss it out there just incase)

lol, go to a used games store, or search if a friend have one of these games, and negotiate a small but just price for the update. I think it takes less than 10 minutes, then come back to your house with your 3ds ready.

Thats actually a pretty good platformer...looks really nice and plays well. I have been annoyed how poorly some 3DS games have reviewed when they are good. The other one that has been under rated is the Castlevania game, yes its not like the DS/GBA games but it is still very good, excellent graphics, and solid gameplay....just not what people wanted.

I actually don't mind paying for a few games, especially pre-owned at Gamestop, because if I really don't like it I can return it. If I like it, I keep it. I just can't afford to buy alot of games since they are so expensive.

Its true...games are pricey and I am sort of spoiled because I am older and have made good money being a technology consultant and then a technology entreprenuer. I don't have any kids of my own, but the wife's family has a bunch of them and I am like the pappa smurf of gaming to them. So I buy a lot of games and when I am done (if I even play them) I usually gift them to kids in the family. One xmas we bough 5 different familes gamecubes and animal crossings because my wife was so into it and the kids would play when they came over here...she wanted them all to have their own towns so she could swap towns/memorycards with them all.....I sort of feel like because I have been blessed with good fortune thru my love of tech the best thing I can do is pay it forward and try to get others interested in it. My passion for tech all started with video games, but I made my money in more serious pursuits...Since selling my last company in 2010 I have honestly considered making my next venture starting an Indie software development team. I am no coder or grafx artist but I can build and manage companies and teams and think I could 'direct' the production of a game and might like to write the story. With things like the eShop and Nintendo and others allow you to self publish it couldn't be easier to do.....my life has always had a lot of synchronisity to it so its kind of like if the signs seem right or someone comes into my circle that knows unity or other programming environment then that would be a good sign to put some money up to build a proof of concept and then maybe do a crowd funding effort to build it out.
