I got a 3DS as soon as possible because I had the mentality of the earlier the console is released the easier it'll be to get hacked and ended up with one of the best consoles of all time. It's entirely your call but I'd suggest buying one. It really is a great system.

First off, the 3DS has only been out for only two years.

Second, the PS3 was released in November 2006, and took until August 2010 for the first public hack.
Holy fuck... but the 3DS security lock doesn't seem to be easy to hack, not to mention they also tried to hack the DSi for free DSiWare games and failed to. They did however made flashcards compatible with the DSi software.

The 3DS and PS3 use the same basic security concepts, which is why it's not simple to get past it. Even now, new PS3 models in the store can't be hacked at all.

DSi-compatible flash carts came out rather quickly and didn't try to do DSiware stuff.

Yes and now they have some obscure hacks that only work if you happen to have an ancient PS3 revision and firmware.

Hooray?
"Obscure" my ass. :P There's multiple CFWs out there even for the same firmware revision. You only need to be on a lower firmware to start with in order to dump your keys, once you have your keys you can install a multitude of firmwares on multiple base OFW versions. You can even downgrade older PS3 models to the lower firmware if they've had it before.

Same deal as with the 360, you know. Older models only, need to dump your keys, etc (but the 360 hacks are even more limited0.

You should just say fuck it to 3DS flashcards and buy a 3DS XL already.

Damn it, why people wanna buy a 3DS when a flashcard comes out JUST to play free games?

Seriously, a lot of good titles are gonna be released for the 3DS: Donkey Kong Country Returns (yes, the Wii one), Mario and Luigi Dream Team and more.
Just a quote for the fucking true. Its stupid that people are "holding out"
There are a lot of awesome games available and the ones that are coming are looking great. Only poor guys with no jobs do that(Of course if you really like the 3DS)

3DS started off stale, but now it has plenty of great games. Totally worth a buy if you can afford games. The eShop virtual console alone was enough for me. =)
