Okay I just got back into the DS/3DS world with the new pokemon and ATLUS entertainment games coming out for the system. I had lost my original R4 card and wanted to get a new one so I looked around and got the r4isdhc.com RTS Silver 2013. It seemed like the best one other than the DSTWO but the DSTWO was too expensive so I said screw it. Now that I have this the menu looks pretty much the same as it did for the original R4 and seems kinda lame. I was looking for how to change the theme and I saw that there is a r4i-sdhc.com and their cards seem much better. Should I return this one and get the other or are they about on par?

I saw that but it looks out of date. The two cards I referenced can both play DS roms on the 3ds and have the real time save option along with cheats and I think one has slow-mo. Plus neither are mentioned. I picked the silver originally because it has a dual core processor and the real time save option which sounded nifty. I can't afford a DS two and frankly believe they are overcharging for a simple piece of hardware.

  1. The carts on the chart play DS ROMs in the 3DS too. All flash carts that work on the 3DS do that, that's pretty much the point.

  2. The R4i Gold and DSTwo both have real-time save. All the carts have cheats.

  3. Neither are mentioned because neither are suggested carts. Look around you and you'll see tons of people asking for help with unsupported/dropped/dead carts.

And when people talk about them, we try not to suggest them in the first place. Like the "R4i Gold Plus". Check here. You can see somebody saying people should buy it, and me saying it's shit and you shouldn't.

And oh, look, it gets discontinued, so no more updates.

  4. The silver does NOT have a dual-core processor. That is an outright lie.

  5. The DSTwo is not a normal flash cart, it has an onboard CPU that lets it do a lot more than normal carts. In addition, it's the ONLY flash cart that has NEVER needed a hardware update to bypass a 3DS update. Check out the links, and you'll see that if people update their 3DS (to access online or play a new 3DS game), their cart will stop working, and if there's no update it'll never work again. Obviously that should be prevented, which is why we tell people to only buy the carts that have shown themselves to update whenever possible.

Welcome to Chinese aftermarket goods. Most of them are shit clones, and they will outright lie to you. This is why we have stickies.

Okay but the R4i Gold wasn't even mentioned on other sites and it isn't even sold where I bought my RTS Silver.Plus DSTWO is $40-50 compared to the $17 I would pay for any other card for very little extra in what I need. And the WOOD kernel means nothing to me at all so saying it supports wood doesn't help. I think the site I'm returning my card to only has in store refunds too.

But basically you're saying my choices are 1.) No Flash Card. 2.)R4i Gold or 3.) DSTWO and thats it?

Also the R4 3ds card from r4i-sdhc.com has a really nice looking interface.

Wood is for game support, I didn't even mention it because other carts have alternatives for Wood (their native OS). The reason people freaked out about Wood is that it gave previously-unsupported carts the ability to play new games.

What I was talking about, however, are firmware updates.

And a fancy interface does jack shit if the cart won't run anymore after a DSi/3DS update. :P

If you want to use the flash cart on a DSi or 3DS, then yes. There WERE other carts on the list (Acekard 2i, M3i Zero, iEvolution) that were, in their time, very popular and top-used carts... but they stopped getting support/updates, and so were dropped off the list.

I'm not mad at you, I'm just trying to let you know that I have seen a hundred people make the same mistake you're making... which is why there's a suggested cart list in the first place.

I have to get it from http://r4ibuy.com/ and the cards they offer are RTS, Dual Core, R4i 3ds (red box), and the DSTWO. It's store credit so I need to pick from here.

And I know a freindly GUI doesn't mean alot function wise but it's still nice to have a 3ds/Wii like menu rather than the Moonshell blech one I saw back in 200x when I got my first R4

The actual site, and users here, confirm it works on 5.1.x just fine, as well as DSi/XL 1.4.5, you can see there's updates on the official site for it too. I don't know why the site even bothered making a picture chart for the updates, they come out on a regular basis, so as you see their stuff's going to get outdated. Other shops use plain text so they can update it easily each time.

The only way it won't work is if they're actually selling just you old stock.

But as I said I already paid for one and I'm returning it so I need to buy from that site. I might just complain and see if I can get bumped up to the DSTWO for cheap. Just out of curiousity though what is the biggest problem with the R4i-sdhc.com model? It seems just about perfect with 100% compatibility, anti-piracy bypass, a nice gui and fast updates.

Individual update speed isn't very important (most carts update in 24 hours to a week), it's how long the updates last.

Like I linked, other people bought carts like this because they were cheap, made promises, and gave a few updates. Then they stopped. I can't stop you from buying it, but if you buy it and the support on that model drops, your answer will be "buy a new cart", just like everybody else's. Look at the site, they list some of their old models as well, which can't update. Hell, the front page has a notice promising updates for the older cart... from December. Obviously the updates never came. :P

This is a realistic risk when buying cheap flash carts. This is why the DSTwo is so highly suggested. Nobody who bought a DSTwo needs to buy another to get past an update. It's twice as expensive as other carts, but still less than a single brand-new DS game, and 2 x $20 is less than 1x $35. :P

Is there a way to mod the DSTWO menu to be like the redboxes? Apparently they use Moonshell from the looks of their FIrmware packet. But the pictures of their interface are more 3ds/wii like with the rounded bubble buttons and such

No suggested cart uses Moonshell for the main interface anymore.

6:32 is where he puts the flash cart in and fires it up to look at the interface and run a game. The main screen uses the bubble icons like the DSi/3DS, but that's only to choose which "segment" of the cart to run (plugins and such). The default one, DS Games, has a more conservative look.

At 8:05 he jumps into the DS game loading software.

The gold card uses almost the same design, in fact most carts can switch around between list and grid view modes. Here's two pics I just took of my DSTwo with a Windows 7 skin. The first pic is the grid mode, second is the list mode. Pressing Select cycles around the display modes (there's a second list mode without icons that's much more compact, but I never use that one).

The list mode with icons is likely what you've seen if you saw any pics of Wood or AKAIO or something like that.

Anyways for use on a DSi or 3DS, the DSTwo and the r4ids.cn cart are the main two we suggest. There used to be others that we could trust, but they won't work on an updated DSi/3DS (and some of them never worked on the DSi/3DS at all), which is why they're not on the list.

The R4i-sdhc-dual core (white) "new" and "2013" models work great.
The "2013" is still getting new updates, runs super fast, runs all homebrew that i've tried, has a good interface, etc.
I've got at least 20 good emus on it running super smooth.
It was like $12.

I feel the best answer for the DS system updates thing is to just simply DO NOT UPDATE your DS.
90% of the reason for the updates is to lock out these fun little cards.
Not like Ninty offers amazing new stuff to do with their updates anyway.
So i say, just don't update the damn things.

I keep all my DS's wifi DISABLED, so I can keep enjoying the things in this fashion, til they die or i die. :)

Pretty simple concept...
