My PC uses my CUDA cores to crunch videos, because my CPU is a lousy dual core Athlon X2 5000+. My CUDA card cuts my encoding times down from 6 hours, to an hour.

I'd imagine the hardware responsible for crunching the numbers is beefier than the average home computer. How many people are using the resources at the same time is a different issue all together.

None of this changes the fact that there's no reason a web service can't provide just as good an end result as a dedicated piece of software... for all you know it's just feeding the file into the same software you'd be using yourself and spitting out the result.

With this you need to upload and then download the video.

So it's slower because it includes two steps that home programs don't, and these two steps (the first one mainly) are notoriously-slow steps.

None of this changes the fact that there's no reason a web service can't provide just as good an end result as a dedicated piece of software... for all you know it's just feeding the file into the same software you'd be using yourself and spitting out the result.

Well, this depends on who is hosting the site doing this. I'm pretty sure bypassing the upload and download makes it a lot easier to convert on your home computer (and faster) for many people. Does the converter even support use of more than 2 or 3 threads anyways, never really looked into how the converter is programmed. If not, most modern hardware, even down in the i3 brackets of Intel Ivy/SandyBridge CPU's will convert almost as fast as the server counterpart.

Faster, maybe. Is browsing to a web page and doing an upload easier than installing a dedicated application? Probably not much in it to be honest.

However take this into consideration:
- uploading your file beforehand is needed (probably)
- then the encoding takes place by using a server side encoding that is probably worse than your home pc...

Servers are often set up just for number-crunching, so they'll almost always be at least a bit faster than home computers.

But the upload and download can often take longer than the actual conversion process, tossing that benefit out the window.

You don't need to manually upload the file if you downloaded the file on the internet for most websites. For example, let's say I used Flash Video Downloader add-on for Firefox. I copied the url of some online video (for example, server1.streamingsite.com/media/videos/abc/sample.flv) to my clipboard and paste the link of the file onto the webpage of the converter, It saves me time because I don't have to manually convert the file after I download it. The file downloads to their servers and I can just bookmark the page. There is a 100 MB limit if you don't get their premium membership. This method works for a lot of streaming sites. It doesn't work for Youtube though. But it does work for a lot of anime and direct download sites. (It used to work for Megaupload)
