What would cause someone to do something like this? Like, honestly. Unless he had some kind of grudge against the government and was trying to make a statement (which appears to have failed, I might add) there really is no reason.

My condolences to the families of those two guys. Right before christmas. That's just brutal.

/actual but not necessary post hidden.
An ex-con who had killed before killed again.

...shock and awe.

and this is why I think execution should be much more common. He can't kill any more people if he's dead.

First the shooting in Newtown, now this? What the hell is wrong with America?

I know right? It's strange really, ever since that deadly shooting in newtown there have been alot more smaller random shootings if not more. i hope this and the newtown shooting gets washington and the NRAs attention!

I see things like this in the UK news a fair bit, moronic kids setting fire to cars so they can throw rocks at the emergency services when they arrive. Deadly serious here, kids really are that fucking stupid. Better hope your house doesn't catch light on Bonfire Night here in Coventry. If you're in the wrong neighbourhood, the fire crew won't even come to you. It's too dangerous for them, they keep getting injured by flying bricks. And now we have Americans setting things on fire just so they have something to shoot...I really do despair at the state of humanity.

You know what? Fuck 2013. You can keep it, world. I'm not interested any more.

It's even scarier when it's all over your local news... my parents live in Rochester (relatively close to where this happened, in Webster) and I'm home with them for the holidays. I'm glad my family is all okay here. It's also good that we moved from Hartford, Connecticut about 10 years ago, where I was born and raised (about 3 cities away in that very small state from Newton, where the Sandy Hook crisis occurred.) I was really scared when someone told me "There was a school shooting somewhere in Connecticut" before I had a chance to turn the news on, and when my father came home from work saying that there was another shooting real close by.

I just feel absolutely horrible for the victims in these tragedies though, and I wish there was something we could do to stop these senseless acts of violence. With these things occurring around Christmas time, it's really making it 100 times worse than it is, and it's horrible enough already.

Can it just stop? Please?

Two words : Video games.

I really don't like this explanation, in fact, it really pisses me off. It's potentially a contributing cause, at most, but not THE reason it occurred. A person of normal, mental health with proper upbringing will play games like Call of Duty, Left 4 Dead, and Grand Theft Auto to name a few, and to them, it is really just a game, a source of fun. They can differentiate between this game, and real life. To someone who is unstable in their mental health, and/or raised in a poor environment, they are likely to take these games one step further, into real life. It is an influence and a catalyst in cultivating ideas at best.

The killer can't be questioned by authorities and say "video games made me do it." It's an easy excuse and they need to take ownership for their actions.

Sarcasm, sir. But I completely agree with you. But I think the real problem is that people can get a gun way too easily in certain countries (I'm not talking about USA only, we have the same problem in Switzerland with army guns (principaly assault rifles) - army is mandatory for every men and we got to keep our weapon at home. )

I'm sorry, when something is so serious, horrific, and hits so close to home, it's really hard to detect sarcasm. Especially on the internet, because we talk in text.

I'm also a lady...

but back on topic. There's already many gun control laws, and yes, while you may think a gun is "too easy to get here", think again. In the Sandy Hook Elementary School crisis, when the killer shot 20 children on December 14th, mostly kindergartners and six staff, in addition to killing his own family, he was refused a gun when he went to the store to buy one. It was his mother's collection that he stole the gun from. Gun control laws may make it harder to obtain guns, but a criminal is a criminal. They will still get it anyway, somehow if they are that driven to kill.

This is utterly disgusting and completely infuriating. WHY are there more and more people taking out their anger and frustration on under-paid, over-worked people who provide life-saving services for them?! My younger brother is a fire fighter for a town where there are assholes that like to randomly shoot at fire fighters and cops. They can't even respond to a fire in the area without a police escort now. Deleting the rest of this post since it was just tons more rage.

My deepest condolences to the families. I hope the survivors make full and speedy recoveries.

I can't comprehend what thought process would lead someone to do such a thing. That kind of makes it all the worse - a crime of passion, or act of revenge, or some botched robbery can be understood, at least.

If you want another argument for boosting our funding to mental health service, we're looking at it.

From what I heard this guy killed his grandma 30 years ago with a hammer. His Mom died recently and donated a sum of money to the fire department and likely his sister, who went missing. Some remains were found at his house after they put the fire out and it's believed to be his sister.

According to NRA arming everybody is the answer.
I say, to really test an idea (however stupid it might sound) the best thing to do is follow it to the end. Let's just arm everybody and see how it goes.
