A decent bit of information about Sony's upcoming crossover brawler Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale got released in anticipation for its mid-November release.

The first is the opening cinematic.

Pretty neat, huh? If you're too lazy to watch, it shows the cast of Playstation All-Stars duking it out, showing the ten "rivalries" in the game. As a fun note, the entire battle also takes place on the Playstation's Xross Media Bar, or XMB, the layout for the Playstation 3 and Playstation Portable. It looks like LiveArea's bubbly appearance didn't get love this time around. If you were wondering what the ten rivalries were...
  • Ratchet & Clank versus Jak & Daxter
  • Sly Cooper versus Nathan Drake
  • Fat Princess versus Evil Cole MacGrath
  • Sir Daniel Fortesque versus Colonel Radec
  • Sackboy versus Big Daddy
  • Nariko versus Dante
  • Heihachi versus Toro
  • Spike versus Parappa the Rapper
  • Good Cole MacGrath versus Raiden
  • Sweet Tooth versus Kratos
Second bit of news is the final boss for the single player. It's... Polygon Man! The would-be Sony mascot was meant to spearhead the ad campaign for the original Playstation but was pulled before console was released. However, he finally gets his first public release here. There were also a slew of other candidates for final bosses, including Zeus from God of War and Dr. Nefarious from Ratchet and Clank, but Polygon Man was chosen for "[making] these crazy statements, these sort of almost nonsensical statements, like ‘power is an illusion’, ‘absolute power is a seamless illusion’. These really weird, grandiose statements. He doesn’t really come off as a bad guy, but he comes off as kind of this representative of power, the power and potential and what PlayStation represents."

A small bit of info about the single player aspect of the game was also revealed, with Sony Santa Monica head Seth Killian toting "Hundreds of hours of content" on the single player side of things. Aside from the arcade mode, Killian noted challenges and trials as well as tons of unlockables, such as titles, taunts, character-specific intros and endings, music, badges, and more.

For the final piece, PASBR will also have DLC. This includes characters and stages. However, that's the only info we got there. So if you were upset about your favorite Playstation character not making the cut, perhaps you'll see him here?

Pretty interesting, maybe I'll get it after it drops in price (or wait for PS Plus to give it to me for free after a year or so). I tried playing the Beta a few days ago but it told me it couldn't connect to the server or something, so probably they already stopped it. The only weird thing for me is that Cole is in there twice. Sure, he has different abilities, but it's still the same dude.

I'm guessing that it would've been impossible to fairly incorporate both Evil and Good Cole abilities into a single character. Both characters have rather separate moves and aren't essentially "reskins with slight differences" like Link vs. Toon/Young Link, Mario vs. Dr. Mario, etc.

Damnit I wanted Crash or Spyro, but I suppose Sony doesn't really own them any more do they? As for the game itself, I'll hold off on saying smash clone till I actually play it.
Also Big Daddy vs sackboy...really?

You just had to compare them, had you? Anyway I know that, but Link and Toon Link are - more or less - separate characters. They have the same attacks and stuff, but that's not what I meant. Evil Cole/Good Cole is literally the exact same dude with different abilities. That's the part I find weird. It's not about the char being a carbon copy with slightly different stats and timing and stuff, but about it being the same dude. I'm not saying Ninty is blameless - the two you posted are pretty good examples. It just feels weird to me to have two separate characters who could've been each other had they picked others abilities/path.

Edit: Especially because in the beta everyone had to pick a different character so that none were the same.

I meant that Evil and Good Cole had distinctly different attacks compared to Link/Toon Link or Mario/Dr. Mario or Capt. Falcon/Ganondorf. I mean if you want a non-SSB comparison, try Ryu and Ken.

They split the characters because they most likely wanted to fairly incorporate Cole into the game but couldn't do so without choosing one side or another. So instead of having only a one-sided Cole that wouldn't entirely represent him or the franchise, they made two Coles.

I really have no issue with it considering he's the only "dupe" character there and isn't even a move dupe as much as just being the same character.

EDIT: As per "picking different path" type of thing, it seems useless to incorporate such a feature when only one character would use it. It's not like SSB which has essentially "double characters", one character who can play as two or more (Zelda, Samus, and Pokemon Trainer). The only character who would use this is Cole, and having a Cole build where he has access to such a diverse variety of moves would be way too overpowered.

Maybe if they have a sequel we'll see Dark/Light Jak, Good/Evil Cole, stuff like that.

Him being overpowered depends. If it takes a few seconds for him to "change form" with a cool lightning effect or something it's not that overpowered because you'd be extremely easy to hit right after changing. Zelda and Pokemon Trainer (Samus can't change at will) aren't overpowered either and they are the only ones who can change forms whenever they want to. I doubt Light Jax as a second form though, considering that's his Level 3 super (I thought). I do get how it wouldn't represent him properly, but I still think it's kind of strange. Again, that's just my opinion though. I find Link/Toon Link a bit strange as well. Besides, maybe they could use the feature in some DLC characters as well?
Edit: Oh and I never played SF so I don't know who Ken is :P

Even the transformation is a bit OP. You're invulnerable during both transitions (you're obviously vulnerable at the tail end of it but you can spam the transforms to dodge a lot of wide AoE attacks). Also I think there's some odd button combo you can do to have Samus change at will but you can hold a button when selecting Samus to make her enter as Zero Suit Samus. Just a fun fact.

However this game is constructed rather differently from SSB. Perspective wise it's like SSB, plays sorta like a platformer and a fighter, but mechanically it has combos and such and having two forms would probably entail two different sets of ultimates. Having a character with six different ultimate attacks when everyone has three would really break balance, and having three generic ones wouldn't do justice to the character either. But I understand where you're coming from.

TBH I don't know what they'd do for DLC characters. I'm guessing some more MGS characters since some people were a bit upset that they chose Raiden over other characters (namely Old Snake as he's completely Sony exclusive or even The Big Boss, Solid Snake, or The Boss). I thought it was rumored that they'd have more Tekken characters as well.

If they could work it out with third parties, maybe some Final Fantasy characters (FFVII for its impact on the Playstation brand or FFX for its upcoming HD version), Deimos (Kratos's brother), NON-SHIT Dante (PLEASE) or other DMC characters (Vergil, Trish, Lady), Tomba, or motherfucking Kevin Butler.

I think this game would go pretty well with Eddie Riggs (from Brütal Legend), but he's not a Sony character so that's probably not going to happen. Would be pretty awesome though.

I like that the whole cutscene manages to look badass even with sackboy making big daddy slip on a banana peel XD
I also love the fact that Sir Dan is in the game, I loved MediEvil as a kid. Ill certainly make him one of my main fighters.

Actually suited samus can change her form by taunting up and down really quickly. I have no idea how you get her suit back on from this though without a smash ball. >_>

As for over powered characters only parappa seems that way. From my beta experience, good players would simply destroy with the little feller. The kill zone guy also comes to mind with his distance but someone else in full game probably matches that.

Now the "Sly Cooper versus Nathan Drake" thing just slays me. Got a friend who loves uncharted, and I love me some sly cooper. We each hate the other series. xD
