Whats the reccommended model of Wii to get and the mod to use?

I'm not asking for how-to's, I'm asking for opinions.

The recommended model is one that can play Gamecube games if you care about that (or want to use GC controllers in Brawl), otherwise it doesn't really matter. The best way to mod it is to use ModMii, you can find it on this forum somewhere. It's a program that downloads all necessary stuff and creates a guide for you. It's pretty self-explanatory.

BTW: the model without GC is called "Family Edition" for some inexplicable reason

It's not that inexplicable. It was the name of the first bundle to include the revised GCless model in Europe, with Wii Party bundled and pictures of a smiley happy family on the box.

It's not really the name of the model (for the US it's RVL-101 vs RVL-001 for the version with GC, probably different based on region) but it's one of those things like the old Xbox 360 Pro where the name just took off and people just think it's the name of a particular model even though it isn't.

I've been away too long, did something happen? Are the worlds safe? weren't Wii's made after 2008 or something unhackable?

Oh, is that the reason? I thought it was nintendo's way of admitting that gamecube players had no life (=isolated from their family). ;)

@[member='Chocolina']: while it's true what other members are saying, it's not something you should be concerned about. Stick to a decent guide (modmii), and you'll be just as fine as everyone else (that 'bootmii as boot2' thing isn't something you should be concerned about). And not be able to use backup disks really doesn't matter because you can run everything from USB or SD (yes, even gamecube games).

So yes...the only real difference in wii models is whether to have gamecube ports or not.
