Does anyone have advice on the best way to convert a 30 minute show into a AVI that is not pushing 500mb? I'm trying to keep all video files at 720x480 (native Wii resolution) using the "avi" container so that I can use them in WiiMC and Google Drive. I tend to take HD rips and use "Total Video Converter" to make Wii compatible videos but If I can get my videos to be smaller than 400mb that would rock!

what codec are you using? the x264 one i always found reasonable for pushing the size of HD videos down while keeping the quality, although I ain't certain WiiMC supports x264 or not

According to WiiBrew

Media Playback
  • DVD playback, with DVD menu support (newer Wiis have incompatible drives)
  • Files with AVC/H.264 video streams (typically .mp4, .mkv or .flv's from YouTube or other sites) with resolutions up to 720x480p usually play correctly.
  • Files with MPEG-4 Simple video streams (typically XVID/DIVX .avi's) with resolutions up to 656x352 play correctly.
  • Files with MPEG-2 PS video streams (typically DVD rips and TV-DVR recorded .mpg's) with resolutions up to 720x480 play correctly.
  • Files with MPEG-2 TS video streams (typically HDTV recorded .ts files) with resolutions up to 1280x720 play correctly.
  • AAC, AC3, FLAC, MP3, OGG Vorbis, WavPack, and WAV PCM Audio Streams all play correctly.

h.264...silly fucker I am...I would say give it a try with one of your video files, may help to re-encode the audio too as mp3 perhaps. I can imagine it would knock down the file size a chunk

Just tried H.264 with .MP3 audio and Wii MC got fussy. I'm going to try Divix with .MP3 audio and see what I can get.

EDIT: Under the DIVX tab the file went up and extra 200mb :(

out of interest, did you save any space using h264? I wouldn't loss too much faith yet, maybe with a few updates the codec could run smoother with it

As for video format, h.264 is likely to have the best compression ratio.
As for audio format, you can try AAC, maybe cut a few megs off?

You could try lowering the bitrate too.

Been playing around with video conversion all day. Once I'm done with my Google Drive stuff I'll get back to the WiiMC stuff :) Thanks everyone for your advice!

Actually, I used to know of a program that did pretty much lossless transcoding and kept video sizes ridiculously small, with the only tradeoff being long conversion times. If I recall, it was free too. Sadly, I don't remember its name now. :/ If I find it again, I'll post back.

Edit: Found it.

I'm doing one last test with "Total Video Converter". If I dont get the desired result this time then I'll try "WinFF" (which I'm downloading right now).
