So I'm quitting smoking today. For some reason, I just woke up yesterday, and decided that I wanted to quit. I would go through about a pack in a day and a half or so, so I was smoking quite a bit sadly.

But on the plus side, it was helping me with my chest and health sadly to say. But I'm going to try and not smoke anymore.

Today was my first day without a smoke, and I can say that I'm not craving one, I'm just getting irritated extremely easily.

Anybody here use to be a smoker? What are some tips besides the obvious?

I quit for 10 days 2 months ago , I will quit again before oct. The first 2 days for me were rough . Stay away from all caffeine for atleast the first week and drink lots of water . For the next day or 2 try to keep yourself busy , be it physically or mentally , because if you allow boredom to slip in , a smoke will soon follow. after about a week its get easier , your taste and smell will improve. ( I only restarted because I was at the casino at the time ;-(

I'm not quitting myself since I enjoy it far too much, but I did learn about some tips from my friends who were quitting.

1. You will have munchies. Find a snack you like.
2. Your "hands" are smoking just as much as your lungs are. Have a pen or pencil with you to "fiddle" with - your fingers "got used to" holding a smoke.
3. It's kinda obvious, but if you do have cravings, there's medicine for that. Be it tablets, gum or stickers, you can get your nicotine fix from something else.
4. If all else failes - e-cigarettes, but that kinda defeats the purpose of quitting.

Good luck!

Electric cigs are more of a way to slowly wane yourself off smoking. And they do work, it has been helping my parents quite a bit. Plus, I'd like to think the water vapor they are smoking is cleaning out their lungs :P

Quitting anything like this is a tough undertaking. The cravings are horrible, especially in the first few weeks. It will be a serious struggle to resist just giving up.

Whatever you do, don't. The satisfaction you'll get for pushing on through (on top of the health benefits) is worth all the challenge and hardship.

Good luck.

I don't trust or like store bought vapor's. They're expensive and they suck. I can get one for 80 bucks that's high quality and can be recharged via USB and I can get a bottle of oil that will last about 2 months for 10 bucks.

seeing as I quit back around May or so and still going strong enough, the 4 best hints I will give from my experience

1. The 4 usual reasons smokers will have for smoking will tend to be "it relaxes me", "it relieves boredom", "it helps me concentrate", "it relieves stress". For against smoking will usually be "health", "wealth", "slavery" and the "habit", but all smokers know those yet continue to smoke. Now think for a moment and realise it doesn't relax you, it creates boredom, it impedes concentration and creates stress you suddenly have 8 reasons to stop smoking

2. Smokers don't choose to smoke, when asked if smokers would encourage there children to smoke the answer is usually no, this is because the smoker subconsciously realises that they had fallen into a trap which they do not wish to see there offspring fall into. There is more proof in this was a smoker can always remember there first cigarette but can never remember when they decided to become a regular smoker, because they didn't, as there was no choice in it

3. Don't use nicotine replacements, how do you cure an addiction by feeding it? Would you recomend a heroin adict should inject the drug into his veins rather than smoke it to help ween him off it?

4. You are not giving anything up, it is an addiction, not a pleasure. You can stop smoking without a feeling of doom or worrying if you have enough "will power" and knowing that you will be better equipped to deal with stressful situations

besides those 4 I would say have a glass of orange juice if you get nicotine "twang" as the sugar will fix you up, besides that best of luck

Actually, the cigarettes does relax me and prevents stress for me, which in turn takes the pressure my cartilage and muscles in my torso put on my heart and lungs so they aren't being squeezed. I was even told by the doctors that I should keep smoking because of what it does. Yes they said it's bad for my health, but at this point in time, they said it's strangely enough, saving my life. lol.

Have you ever tried taking in deep breaths and letting it out slowly? for some people don't realise what actually calms them down is getting a good dose of oxygen yet the cigarette gets credit.

Yep, that actually made it worse, when I was hooked up to the heart monitor I was getting more than enough oxygen. I've been to the hospital enough times I know what to try, and I've tried it all.

suprised there, seeing as when people smoke it tends to increase blood pressure which for most leads to stress etc. While the I mentioned there helped me out I do believe people have to find there own ways, even if they need a crutch like a nicotine patch or electronic cig but as you can see, I have given my opinion on those

A few relatives of mine is ex-smokers.
The most common trick most of them give is:

1. Chew a strong mint bubblegum or something similar.
2. Make sure to drink a big glass or two-three regular glasses an hour.
3. Sucking on something, like a lollipop or similar candy (this is the most effective one they said)

I vape. I got my kit in the mail and quit that day. Haven't had a smoke in a year and a half or more (kinda lost track.)
I use an eGo with low resistance atomizers and mix my own juice. Love it. Not only is it far cheaper, but I can sleep at night without having to use an asthma inhaler.
I was a 1 to 2 pack a day smoker, and smoked for about 30 years. I have no urge to go back to real smokes or any urge (or feel any need) to quit vaping at any point, though I might.

I got gum, and I drink over 6 liters of water at work alone, so that's no biggie.

That's what I'd be getting if I was to get a vapo, is an eGo, I had some of my friends, he had mint, strawberry and caramel and stuff, I love those flavors.

ill tell you the truth, quitting smoking is pretty damn hard..., its addictive as hell and also legal
here's the thing:
-smoking does help to relax its a fact medically known, as nicotine binds to parasympathetic receptors (nm, nn) on the brain and on muscles, wich simply put it, make u relax
-smoking will destroy your lungs slowly and painfully (see COPD, lung cancer specially squamocelullar carcinoma, blah blah read about it srsly)
-lung cancer is the worst of them all, worst prognosis, etc.
-replacing nicotine with more nicotine ( aka electronic cigarrettes, chewing, etc) wont help u at all with your addiction problem as youll be addicted to those, but, it will help with the lungs (nicotine has problems outside of the lungs)
-smoking increases risk for cancer everywhere, including the kidneys, liver, colon, blah blah blah.)
-smoking increases risk for cardiac infarction, high blood pressure, and a lot more diseases.
-erectile disfunction anyone?....
-it takes at least a year of not having smoked to get over the addiction
-in 20 years your lungs will be clean as if you had never smoked

try to stay calm and relaxed, avoid stress, excersise may help u stop smoking too, anything stressfull/painful will make u wanna smoke, so avoid that.
good luck

No offense but that was a pretty useless post. About as useless as this post I'm posting.

don't know about the bit of it taking over a year to get over nicotine....anywho, enough about the uphill stuff, lets pull out some things you can enjoy over time

  • Within 20 minutes after quitting, blood pressure and heart rate decrease
  • Within 12 hours, carbon monoxide levels in the blood decrease to normal
  • Within 48 hours, nerve endings and sense of smell and taste both start recovering
  • Within 3 months, circulation and lung function improve
  • Within 9 months, there are decreases in cough and shortness of breath
  • Within 1 year, the risk of coronary heart disease is cut in half
  • Within 5 years, the risk of stroke falls to the same as a non-smoker, and the risks of many cancers (mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, cervix) decrease significantly
  • Within 10 years, the risk of dying from lung cancer is cut in half,[128] and the risks of larynx and pancreas cancers decrease
  • Within 15 years, the risk of coronary heart disease drops to the level of a non-smoker

These 3 don't really affect me, well, now. They might in the future if I keep smoking. But my blood pressure and heart rate are perfect, and the docs and specialists I've seen have all said that for a smoker, it's really surprising that my heart rate and blood pressure are perfect even compared to non smokers, and that my heart is the healthiest they've heard.

The nerve endings and smell thing I don't really understand. I worked on a farm for a year, so I don't really smell anything bad anymore. And my taste buds are just fine. Hell, I loved having a smoke after eating dinner because it kept the flavor of the food in so much longer. It was amazing.

Also, I don't cough or spit up gross stuff like the rest of my friends who are smokers. Which is surprising. And my breathing and whatnot is just fine and I'm really healthy.

Well you got some facts and some opinions out of me anywho, only you can make it happen and I'm sure you will be backed up by your own reasons for doing so. Took me 11 years to get over it after trying more times than I would like to admit but finally being free of the addiction was worth it for me
