Yep, but it didn't enter into my mind until you said something.

It's a forum; arguments are healthy and natural.

Have you ever seen a forum without any conflict or contention? They are not interesting places; just be careful what you wish for.

I have no problem with the actual act of discussion, conflicting or not. It's the unnecessary/unprovoked attacks being made that start many of the flaming because someone has to put up their defenses in anticipation of being attacked first.

But for reals though, it's an internet forum, forum being the keyword. Here, we exchange thoughts on given things, talk about our opinions, agree or disagree - it's really natural that sometimes an argument pops out of it, but it's only for the better that what we like and dislike is diverse - we can learn new things from eachother that way.

If something as simple as this would result in a war, then I see nothing stopping ANY thread from ending without one. But anyways, I guess I got my answer. Even the most harmless thread can go out the window as easily as the most harmful one because of the simple response of "it's the internet".

I don't think that this thread is a fair one to judge the forum by. After all, it calls attention to arguments, and since no one agrees on exactly why we argue or if it is beneficial (or if so, how? etc., etc.), an argument was kind of inevitable. Besides, this seems to be pleasant enough; it hasn't devolved into an onslaught of insults and slurs.

Now, if you were to start a thread about something everyone should agree on ("Upon serious reflection, I have decided that breathing is important.") and everyone started making obscene comments about everyone else's mother, then I would totally agree that we have a serious problem.

Until then, I think we're okay.
