Is there a guide or software to help create a simple NDS homebrew game?

My daughter (13) wants to create a simple game..

I'm hoping for something simple, maybe with templates or something..

This will be a first-time venture into programing..!

Well, 13 is no age to "program anything serious", if she has no programming experience that is, so I suggest James Garner's DS Game Maker - it's very straight-forward and built to work like a standard Game Maker.

There's also DS App Studio, but that's a bit more advanced.

I don't really agree but its true that it can be difficult but not impossibke, I personally began at this age though it requires a bit of logic.
If she wants something simple, ds game maker is the way but if she wants to program and not just edit, she must install palib
many people will say "don't listen it is outdated! No more a good library", but in fact it is the easiest way to learn ds coding because the palib wiki is really good, the old one I mean because the new lacks content.
palib.info/wiki/

Just figured out that the new site is down, if you need the files just ask me ;)

DSGM has built-in PAlib, so no need for those.

Yes, she *could* learn how to program in, say, C, but the OP said she's interested in making a simple game, and I read that as "a minigame". DSGM's Action-based system of programming is perfect for that kind of usage and the forum is full of helpful users who'll tutor anyone (me among them, I frequent the forum quite often and give C-related tips, I also maintain a lib for loading resources via FAT and NitroFS, since standard DSGM is limited to 4Mb's of the standard RAM).

Java won't help much, but your experience with C will. Try to remember that you must start from the ground up. Focus first on compiling the DevKitARM examples, then work on plotting pixels to the screen, and then work on sprites and the tiling system used on the GBA and DS.

Dragon BASIC might have helped a few years ago for GBA development, but with their forum gone, much knowledge was lost.
