"Mario Kart 64" decompilation project reaches 100% completion

Within the very same week, and in just a span of a few days, we got not one, but two Mario games decompiled, with the first one this week being the very first Gamecube game to get a completed decompilation project with "Mario Party 4", and now another great Mario classic gets a completed decompilation as well, with "Mario Kart 64".

The Mario Kart 64 Decompilation project started back in 2020, with the repository being created on October of that same year, and now, after almost 5 years of on-going and in-depth research, tests and coding, the decompilation project has finally reached its completion, with the "Total Progress" legend now marking a full 100%. The decompilation also has support, not only for the USA version of the game, but also for the European versions 1.0 and 1.1.

This becomes yet another great classic from the N64 library to become fully decompiled, with others like The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Diddy Kong Racing being also completed, amongst many others, and a whole slew of other great titles from the console also have on-going decompilation projects as well.

As usual with decompilation projects, the main repository serves as the main research for the game, while another team of people is usually the one that handles the porting process of the title for PC, which with the decompilation finished, is bound to happen sooner or later.

I hear Mario Kart 64 suffers from issues in emulation, so a full decomp really sets the stage for native ports to multiple platforms.

I want to see if someone mods in 3D models for the sprites. It was noticeable back in the 90's, let alone ~25 years later.

This week's kudos definitely go to the devs that decompiled both Mario Party 4 and this game. What a week.

Thankfully this game will get tons of character mods, like a really big crossover

Lol what issues? There once were FB issues with the "camera" screen in Luigi Raceway but that isn't even a thing, and doesn't affect gameplay

This is mostly correct. It’s certainly useful for ports, but no port is in the works yet.

I posted it on my site with some other (irrelevant) information and the devs scolded me because other sites have been quoting and copying my articles.

I have since rewritten and re-posted the article:

I’m also about to post a new article differentiating decomp / recomp / ports. I have worked in collaboration with the devs so I know it’s all correct 😂

I don't even recall the last time I saw Mario Kart 64 emulated, but users have posted here stating that it doesn't emulate 100% correctly.

I do remember how the JumboTron screens didn't work correctly in the early days, but that was a (very) long time ago.

What big hitters are we missing in terms of n64 decompilation? Smash 64, banjo tooie, conker, golden eye, and perfect dark?

Can't wait for a PS4/PS5 port in 1080p. 🤩
PS5 is highly unlikely until we soon get homebrew games built from an SDK that isn't still work-in-progress.

On the other hand, I'm glad we're getting more decompilations of classic games that deserve to get ports soon enough.
