I had a long and epic story about how and why I keep mine on the setting I use, that no dout you would all remember for year's to come. And perhaps even tell your grand children one day... err but long story short I just keep mine on the setting it was on to begin with...

Turn down the volume to use less power. Higher volume settings lessen the battery life. Some games have the option of turning off sounds altogether from the menu.

Things which contribute to battery consumption:
1. Internet connectivity on
2. Brightness
3. Volume
4. Standby (YUP!)

What else...

My preferred setting would be power saving off, level 3.
What I actually use is power saving on, level 1.

I prefer brightness of 5 with power saving off, no matter what.
But then I don't actually play my 3DS that much at the moment, and it's almost always near a charger.

I think 5 is way too bright. I keep mine on 3, and it's perfect. I don't think I have power saving mode on. Not sure.

3 is perfect for me, because it balances between, able to see and battery length. I haven't had a problem with the battery though because I just drop it on the dock when I'm not using it (I haven't even seen the red light yet, and I've had it from launch).

I used to keep my DSi on 1, and you could barely see anything.

Best setting for me is brightness 2 and power save on games look more detailed with better blacks and ds games look real clean and smooth no jaggies.

At home or when visiting parents:
Brightness 4
Powersaving off
Wifi on
Earphones connected (normally playing between 12am and 6am, don't want to disturb flatmates sleep)

In the rare case I'm playing my 3DS away from a location I can charge:
Brightness 2
Powersaving on
Wifi on
Earphones, depends on the situation.

I've kept it at a brightness of 1 and power-saving for SO LONG that I'm totally used to it. It doesn't look bad at all.

Wireless... I never actually remember that switch, but now I'll switch it off.

Brightness 2.
I turn power saving on/off depending on the situation
Wifi is on most of the time.

Gives me good enough battery life. I've only ever had it go red once.

I take it to the max! I surprisingly get the full run. Played it for about 3.5 hours and in sleep mode for 2-3 days and then it becomes low.

Not bad.
