Yifan Lu Announces HENKaku - A New Native Vita Homebrew Enabler for 3.60.

Earlier today, Yifan Lu, a well-known member of the Vita hacking scene famous for the Rejuvenate hack for the Dev Assistants, has announced that a new (native!) Vita homebrew enabler for the latest firmware version, as of writing (3.60), will be arriving tomorrow at "9:00AM UTC".

The new hack, known as "HENKaku", will require the following:
  • A Vita/PSTV running 3.60
  • A memcard with at least 10MB of free space (internal memory is currently not supported!)
  • An FTP client
  • An internet connection**
**Offline support is now available! Launch the exploit straight from the email app without the need for internet access at all! See the unofficial release thread for more details. (Internet connection still required for installation)

This is a small paragraph of Yifan Lu himself explaining what the properties of this new homebrew enabler does:

HENkaku simply lets you install homebrew as bubbles in LiveArea. It is a native hack that disables the filesystem sandbox. It installs molecularShell, a fork of VitaShell that lets you access the memory card over FTP and install homebrew packages (which we create as VPK files). With vita-toolchain, developers have access to the same system features licensed developers have access to as well as undocumented features that licensed developers cannot use (including overclocking the processors).

The hack has been released at http://henkaku.me ~ Furthermore, the hack is said to be exclusive to 3.60, and there is to be no backports for the time being.

Well I'm too lazy to updade from 3.18 to 3.60 but I'm glad it's working so well

Do it unless you are bothered about current psp kernel exploits on lower fw's. No doubt they will happen on 3.60 sooner or later. I updated my 3.51 at the weekend and it's nice to have native vita hb in a nice easy way.

This is amazing!
am I the only one who doesn't care about Vita piracy? I own every game I wanted for the system, even waiting for the physical verson of Oreshika and Soldner X-2 to arrive in the mail now.
But finally having smooth SNES emulation on the go is a dream come true for me

I agree Vita piracy isn't important.
But I would love to see PSP and PSX "piracy" with this hack. Seems ridiculous that all we have is Nintendo stuff for console emulation on a Sony console.
And a proper N64 emulator.

Same here, PSP and PSX (with full sound support, inc CDDA titles like the Tomb Raider series, Resident Evil 1-3) would be fantastic. I wouldn't be bothered about Vita piracy, as I would get the best titles on original cards and having the aforementioned would be more than enough.

Lol its not all. You literally just use WiFi to update to 3.60 and go to the Henkaku link and run the installer, which doesn't even take a minute to do. After that it's just ftp'n VPK's to the Memory card and installing them.

Is there any sense of urgency to perform this exploit?
I'm currently on 3.20 (PSTV) and I'd like to know if the browser exploit (to run HENkaku) would be possible when 3.61 gets released. I'd like to keep my eCFW and wait till the same is possible in 3.60 to upgrade.

If they patch it, you will be able to update to the version of your choice, there are tons of tutorials. I'm kinda in the same situation on 3.55

You can update to 3.60 firmware offline at any time, even after a new firmware releases.

If eCFW is a must requirement at present then stay as you are, if not, update. Most likely Sony will patch it in 6.61 or whatever version they push out next.

Questions for @yifan_lu or other devs:

1. once you have installed the homebrew from a .vpk package, is it OK to delete the .vpk package?
2. for devs, is there a 'styleguide' (i.e. non-mandatory suggestions) regarding user-files (not in the .vpk) on ux0:? This to avoid that files are going to be all over the place. It'd be nice if everything goes to ux0:\henkaku\appname\ instead of ux0:\data, ux0:\ (root), etc.
3. are there plans for setting up a vitabrew wiki a-la 3dsbrew to support the devs (with only known devs allowed to edit)? {maybe pick a different name as vitabrew is some kind of health drink}

Most people could probably answer your first question. The VPK is just for installation, similar to a CIA as far as I know. You can delete it after you've installed it. If you want to uninstall the app, you go through Content Manager. At least that's what's worked for me ^^
