Work from home

Hello everybody, I've been in the job hunting scene for two months now after being layed off from my previous employer and i'm fed up with my towns extremely low job openings, and now I've decided to check out this work from home mess and want to ask the question "Is there really such a thing as a legit work from home job?" I've been curious as to see if maybe anyone here has a work from home job, or knows someone that has one and will be able to lead me in the right direction.
I've done a lot of Google searching on this subject and found myself running into a lot of sites that make you pay for job listings or pay for phone numbers to these companies and just weird stuff period. I don't think it's right to have to pay to get a job, unless this is how work from home jobs "WORK", which is the reason why i'm asking my good GBAtempers this question.
If anyone knows some great "LEGIT" companies that offer work from home or a site that someone has paid for and has actually gotten great opportunities from it please let me know, also it would nice to know the companies to stay away from as well.

In general if you have to pay for something to get the job, it's a scam.

The only career I can really think of where you can "work" from home is journalism (or any "writing" career path), but you would still have to do field work in that case.

You could always set up an electronic repair service (or some other self-business type thing) out of your home, my Dad does this and takes on odd jobs from neighbours every now and again (well he does more than just electronics, I think he's fixing a table at the moment)

I've got 3+ years retail (ugh) and 2+ years office administration exp and 2+ years Hospitality exp. Sadly all this exp is only because i took on those (IT'S A JOB) jobs and would PREFER to do something a little more in my career goal which is video game journalism or television production, but for a work at home job it can be anything that can keep my bills paid.

Well a lot of youtubers join the youtube partnership program where they earn revenue from the ads on their ORIGINAL CONTENT videos

I personally plan on doing this - for fun of animations and money - I made $0.01 so far on one of my videos since I'm part of the individual partnership program

A lot of people don't have "day" jobs and stuff they earn enough from youtube

Might want to check that out if you like making videos that are original and stuff and no copyright so ye

I do something along the lines of minor research and report-making. Which usually equates to sitting in front of the monitor, Googling and Wiki-ing stuff and then encoding them to fit the person's needs. Just for people I know. Dunno if that counts, but I've been doing pretty well, money-wise.

I want to shift over to writing full-time, though. There's big money in that there pile of blank papers. LOL

I've been planning on being a day trader for a while after I finish grad school. Depending on your skills a good number of large and small companies offer work at home with full teleconferencing, online work, and full videoconferencing, just search some companies in your area and across the country, if you know someone who works in a company that offers. If you have business experience or have degrees in business or finance you are good to go for 60% of these offers, if you have other skills the employer wants then it's a big plus.

My mom once worked for that question database KGB and it didn't really pay much like a couple cents a question. She also had to sign an affidavit basically saying that she is a private contractor for the company and that the company is not responsible for taking taxes out of the "paycheck" she got.

I used to be a WAH junkie before I had my son, so let me tell you about a few that I worked for.

KGB: Depending on the speed of your typing/researching, you may make $4-5 an hour. As far as actually getting IN now? Expect to wait for a very long time before a position opens up.

ChaCha: a KGB wannabe except they do their questions for free. They pay their workers a lot less, and you get a lot less questions. Hardly even worth it. Only apply if you can't get into KGB.

UserTesting.com: Basically, people pay the site to have people review their website(s) for a nominal fee. A usertester uses a proprietary screencap program to review the site answering any requests the website owner has requested. You need to pass a test to get in. You will only know if you passed if in the next 48 hours, you get an acceptance email. Each job pays a straight $10 across the board. You get paid after 7 days have passed from a review, so you have a potential to have money flowing in EVERY DAY. The only caveats are that the jobs are taken very quickly, first come first serve. Also if the client rejects your review you get paid nothing. If you become an esteemed reviewer people WILL start requesting you by name, meaning that you will have guaranteed jobs every once in a while.
