Hi everyone,
I was going to re-install windows home basic for my mother in law, but decided to upgrade it to windows vista home premium with my not so ligit disk, and was wondering do I need a completly new key for it, or can I use the key on the underside of her laptop to activate it. Plus is there anything I need to know befoe upgrading it?? I have re-installed same OS'S before but never upgraded.

That's not how it works. The key on the bottom will only activate Home Basic since that was what was on her computer at the time. So yes, to "upgrade" to Premium, you'll need a Home Premium key.

I see, and apparently I read you can't use the installation disk on 2 seperate machines? Is this true?
No it's the key which is limited.

Provided the PC came with Windows 7 and is from a OEM ie Dell, HP, Lenovo etc all you need to use is one of the generic Windows 7 OEM keys and install the corrosponding certificate.
