Hacking Will the new NSZ format allow large backup files to go under 4 GB?

I've been unable to install backups outside of those available @ hbgshop, because I can't connect my Switch to the computer via USB for the USB install to work.

I've been busy working for the past few weeks but heard about this new NSZ file format, which supposedly is a more compressed version of NSP. How much does it compress the original file exactly, and will it let me just send otherwise large game files unto my SD Card?

Many thanks.

The compression is different for every game. Some shrink a little, some shrink as much as 70%.

However if your goal is to install NSP files larger than 4GB from your SD card why don’t you just split the NSP file and copy it to your SD and install it that way? It’s what we did before USB installation (and I still do it honestly because it’s faster).

In some cases, it might get files a little greater than 4GB to under 4GB, but this won't be the case for a lot of games. A lot of my files are approximately 80% their original sizes. Some are much smaller, and some are much larger. It depends on the game.

If you are having issues with games that are too big to put onto your SD card, you should either a.) get USB and/or FTP installs working, or b.) split the NSP files. Alternatively, you could reformat your SD card as exFAT, but this is not recommended. Regardless, NSZ is probably not the solution you're looking for.

Which NSP splitter would you suggest using? I couldn't get USB install to work, and FTP installation makes me go ???.

You need nut server running on your computer for USB or FTP installs.

I looked at the tutorial of Nut, and it mentions getting Zadig to work as one of the (later) steps. Is Zadig essential to get Nut server working? I could never get anything done in Zadig when I unsuccessfully tried to establish a USB connection with my Switch.

However you do it, you need the proper drivers installed for USB installations to work. You don't need the drivers for FTP installs.

If you use Windows 10, this splitter was JUST released: https://gbatemp.net/threads/nspsplitty-gui-form-nsp-split-tool-for-windwos-10-only.551454/

If you don't use Windows 10, there's a few others including this one: https://gbatemp.net/threads/legal-nsp-splitter-for-fat32.520213/

or this one: https://gbatemp.net/threads/xci-cutter-tool-windows.504818/ (also works for NSP)

Ah nice, you're the one behind these tools. Sadly, I have Windows 7 but I can see myself updating soon.

Are there any obstacles to installing your file after transferring its split folders unto your SD Card? Do you just select the first part and watch it install as it would install a whole file?

Only for USB installs.
Other than network installs not needing the driver and being slower, USB and network work pretty much the exact same way in Tinfoil.
Did you select the correct device in Zadig (and selected the libusbK driver)? It should work fine if you do it correctly. Though you need to be on an admin account, and running it as admin.

My PC doesn't detect my Switch period (there's a signal you hear when you plug it in, but it leads to nothing). Nor does my mother's laptop. Could be a cable problem but I only have this one.

The Switch shows the folder as a file, so it works identical to a file under 4GB.

That sound doesn't happen if you plug in a device that only charges, it only happens if there's a device recognized. So it is recognizing something... Not sure why it's not showing up. Have you checked Device Manager?
