hi members , i bought a faulty WII for a $1 and it has a Drive where it wont spin discs

i have already purchased a replacement Drive Motor its on the way from the US , i was wondering if i were to softmod it now would i run into any problems and risk a brick ?

or should i wait till the replacement Drive Motor comes and install that and then softmod ?

I've seen multiple Wiis not run anything from SD or USB with a bad disc drive but if you read on the net you will find cases of both. All you can do is try.

It depends what version the firmware is on. If it is older (forget what version patched the exploit) version of firmware you can use the Banner Bomb to install custom software. Otherwise you will need a retail game like Lego Indiana Jones or Super Smash Bros Brawl to exploit it.

after reading the replies i think the best thing to do is wait till the Motor arrives , then install and test it and when successful go and softmod.

ive done about 15 softmods in my own WII's and all were successful , id hate to brick this WII due to being impatient

all responses are appreciated if i did go ahead with a softmod without checking first this could have been a disaster

    A faulty Wii for 1$?

Quite the price must say, a few fixes and its working wonders.

EDIT: As long as the Wii is booting you can softmod it, running backups through USB Loaders doesn't require a functional disc drive.

May I ask, what version is your Wii's system?

Letterbomb/wilbrand have been out for a while. You don't need any special game to exploit a 4.3 wii anymore.

EDIT: also, you are fine to softmod it now. If the wii is booting normally then you aren't going to have any higher a chance of bricking than a wii with a working drive.

You don't need the motor, you don't even need the drive. The very femtosecond you softmod the system, all the disc-related rubbish goes right out of the window because using a USB HDD is oh-so-much-more convenient. All you need to mod the system is an SD card - that's it. The disc drive is not required at any point of the process. The fact that you got the system for $1 is amazing, by the way.

i had a very very quick look when i first got it and i think its on 4.2

yeah ive used Letterbomb about 4 times and its fantastic , it worries me with some of the posts in this Thread and my own thoughts that im not 100% confident that softmodding this thing in its current state is safe

Then just letterbomb it and install bootmii as boot2 if available, you don't need to wait for the drive motor, heck you didn't even needed to fix the disc drive, a wii for 1$ is amazing, along with a cheap sd card and a usb thumb drive and you're good to go.

I'm a little bit out of the loop, but since when does usb loading work without a dvd drive in the Wii? As far as i know, the drive can have a broken motor or laser, and everything still works. But if the drive chip is missing or broken, then loading disc-based games from usb does not work. That's why a modding a Wii with an internal 2.5" HDD is more complicated than you would think.

Aside from that, softmodding the Wii anyways won't harm. Stuff will either work or it won't. It's highly unlikely that stuff will have the "won't work" moment in a critical moment like overwriting critical system files. Also, if you skip touching boot2, System menu, priiloader, and the system menu IOS, then you would be save even with a power loss in the worst moment. That means, if you just install HBC, BootMii IOS, IOS236(kinda optional), a cIOS(IOS slot >200) and usb loaders(on your sd card/usb for HBC), then you are save.

For what it's worth, if the Wii has an older disc drive you may want to consider fixing it simply so you can play GC disc-based backups. DIOS MIOS doesn't have 100% game compatibility, so you may be able to play incompatible games via disc.
