Hi there guys

I'm relatively new to soft modding my Wii and I've hit something of a snag. I've tried to play Mario Kart on my Wii but when I select the game on the menu. The screen will go blank for a few seconds before throwing me back in to the Homebrew Channel.

Following this guide and one I found on Youtube, I used Custom IOS installer to install to slot IOS36. I found another user on this board had similair problems to me and was told to installed to slot 249/250. I've tried doing this, but it gives me an error ret 1035.

Would really appreaciate some help :)

Here is a sysinfo

D2x will probably be closer to what you're looking for, it's a lot simpler to set up. v10 Beta 52 or v8 Final should work fine. Here's a starting point. The guide on there is a bit old, but should work. Just make sure you're using either v10 or v8, instead of the version the guide recommends. You need to use a cIOS that will allow USB access, which d2x allows.

Do i just leave what i installed in slot 39? or do i have to uninstall it?

You mean 36? It's not hurting anything, you can remove it if you really want. For the most part, you'll probably be using IOS58 for homebrew and cIOS249 for Wii backups. There will be a few exceptions, though it's nothing to worry about unless you want to get into EmuNAND or older homebrew.

TecXero - Thank you for the advice, your gentle nudge in the right direction sorted me out. I was a little confuzzled when it came to using the D2x installer, specially when you hit the screen with the squares filled with numbers. The guide didn't really explain what to do ther so i just went for broke and selected the only block that was flashing and crossed my fingers.

Now my Wii is modded, does this mean i can play backups of my Wii games? I like taking my Wii over to friends and not having to use original discs would be great.

I installed that because i thought it would do what the D2x installer did for me just now, but i was still unable to run anything off the USB port.

"IOS58 for homebrew and cIOS249 for Wii backups" I'm really sorry, but could I trouble you to explain that. The guides tell you to install stuff, but they dont really stop to explain why. I thought I was merely patching the rom, but I gather from your comment, i'm actually installing two seperate patches, is that about right?

Try going into settings and choose default for Usbloadergx. If you still get a black screen go into wii settings and set up TV type.
You basically want cios 236, cios 249 base 56, cios 250 base 57 and cios 251 base 58

http://filetrip.net/wii-downloads/homebrew/download-ios236-installer-8-mod-f32100.html

So much easier if your wii is connected to the internet. If not online Download these with NUS and pack as WAD- IOS bases:IOS56 v5661, IOS57 v5918, IOS58 v6175 (you will need ios36 on the root as well not sure which one just download them all and put them on the root of sd card)place these as wads on the root of sd card. You should know at least to have an sd with the rite folder structure with an apps folder.
Install ios236 useful for installing wads wad manager 1.7. install d2x cios249 base 56 d2x cios250 base 57 and d2x cios251 base 58. Then try usbloadergx again

An IOS is sort of like a mini OS. Generally software will load with an IOS that gives it access to what it needs. On USB Loader GX, you can go into the settings and set which IOS you want it to use. Since you installed d2x base 56 on the IOS slot 249, you want to set it to 249.
