Nintendo's new console the Wii U will indeed support 3D if you have an appropriately fancy television, company president Satoru Iwata has told Mercury News (via CVG). However, as most people don't own a 3D TV, and many cannot comprehend why you would want one, Nintendo's not pouring too many resources into it.

"If you are going to connect Wii U with a home TV capable of displaying 3-D images, technologically, yes, it is going to be possible, but that's not the area we are focusing on," Iwata explained.

"When it comes to 3-D, we already have the 3DS, and each owner of the Nintendo 3DS is capable of viewing 3-D images. However, when it comes to the home console, it depends upon the availability of 3-D TV sets at home, which, unfortunately, is not expanding enough. And rather than pouring a lot of energy into that kind of area, with the Wii U we'd like to focus more on each Wii U owner being able to have an equal opportunity to enjoy it." [/p]

Um... 3d TV support didn't even cross my mind, but I guess it still nice to have it.

+1 Nintendo.

3d isn't confirmed it's just possible -_-.

lots of misleading articles on gbatemp lately.
Well if the support is there, then it up to devs to use it. Correct?

"...it is going to be possible, but that's not the area we are focusing on"

no where did it say that it supports 3d. it's just possible. the whole story just sounds a tad blown up don't you agree? isn't the 3ds possible with 360 as well (im not really sure myself) but there was no support really. only reason why ps3 is getting 3d is because of Sony pushing it. If nintendo is not focusing on 3d, its going to go no where.

Doesn't Black Ops support 3D? It isn't like developers haven't already been going out of their way to add 3D support to games. People may just be becoming aware of the fad, but it's been moving for awhile now.

your right. but still theres like no 3d support for 360. if it's not a focus, i bet 3d will be barely supported on the wiiu if it supports it at all. But still, 3d in gaming is new so maybe it will get bigger later on and i could be completley wrong ^.^

if it does get good support than its good for me in the end since i have a 3dtv myself, but its pretty lame after a bit since the glasses darkens the screen like crazy.

Yeah Black Ops among many other games are starting to add 3D support. Xbox 360 is starting to have a small amount of 3D support, but it isn't native like the PS3 versions of games. For PS3 as soon as the PS3 notices that 3D is possible on a game it will ask if you want to switch to 3D, and on the 360 you kind of have to mess with options and change the 3D settings on the TV to side by side.

@phantastic91: there is 3D support on the 360 for some game like Enslaved although it requires a purchased DLC to be used. Also the recent Sonic Generations trailer on 360 was in 3D it's just you have to mess with options to change the game and becomes a hassle on the 360.

Maybe it is blown up a little, but at least there is a chance for 3D games on the Wii U.

Not sure if the 3ds is possible with the 360 tho.

Lol didn't see the 3ds part haha. and yes there is a chance. but i just don't like how these articles write the way they do because i can easily see myself as a kid reading this and getting so exited only to be dissapointed later on just because I read "wii U supports 3d..." even though iwata never even said "supports"

i guess that increases hope for 3d games on wiiU then =]. if it does...hope its not a hassle like 360 then o.O

A lot of GPU's have had quad buffering for a long time. I played through Half Life in HD and 3D long before you could buy a HD telly. It really is just a case of moving the camera slightly and rendering the frame again, hardly any more coding work than a normal graphics engine. The hard part is getting the quality/performance balance right, and you have to deal with the reduced picture quality and field of view what there is no way to get around with the unnatural act of having a different focal point to point of convergence. And most of that balancing act comes down to art and level design more than anything else.

What do you mean? Active/passive glasses, glasses/headtracking, or something else entirely?

To my knowledge there are two types of glasses that use 3D. Active will half the framerate to produce one image for each eye, and Passive will produce two images from the same frame from angling light the right way.

True, but like phantastic said, it's up to the TV. All the console has to do is send both pictures to the TV.

I'd like to find a power strip and HDMI selector built in 1 unit, so I can select which game system I want, and will switch to that hdmi, and power on that plug/power supply only, so don't have all game systems powered all the time, but can't find anything like. May just have to make something myself.

@Xdqwerty yes, when you are installing Windows on the first steps you are asked for your current location, you MUST to select «international» so no bloatware is installed, because the bloatware is location based. if this night I have some time I will setup a VM and take screenshots.
