To my knowledge there are two types of glasses that use 3D. Active will half the framerate to produce one image for each eye, and Passive will produce two images from the same frame from angling light the right way.

They both half the frame rate. Active uses mechanical shutters in the glasses, passive uses polarised lenses.

True, but like phantastic said, it's up to the TV. All the console has to do is send both pictures to the TV.

I see. this is why I like GBAtemp. You learn something new every day!

EDIT: So choosing a 3DTV won't be a problem. It all depends on how much you want to spend.

A super fanboy quote:

Jack: That was 2006 for us

just a joke.

Anyway, I had no idea about the types of 3D. Technology is so advanced now

I'm really glad they aren't pushing the switch to 3D for consoles.

Sony is desperately trying, but no one is going to buy their $1000 TVs.

It just isn't worth it at this point, to get a new TV and to wear glasses just to play a game in 3D...

hmmm...

also, all this does is gives us options . personally, i also don't think its worth it just to get a 3dtv for gaming, but having options is nice. i don't play my two 3d games cod and mk in 3d but i do test them out and it looks cool. its not like i pay more. So why are you "really glad" that they aren't pushing 3d. all it does is give us options or if you look at it another way---a freebee. i don't get statements like these. lets say 3d catches on later, wouldn't it be nice to revisit these old games later when you do get a 3dtv. also glassesless 3d tvs are going to get made too.

3D TVs are still very expensive in Singapore.

I'll just wait for the fave to die down.

LCDs used to be thousands, but now its only S$800 - 1200.

If you didn't like 3d, don't use it and let the ones that do enjoy.

I don’t want the only options of gaming to be… PC gaming, PC gaming on a console, and Nintendo’s weird 3d shit.

Nobody's forcing you to use it.. Ninty isn't even focusing on 3D. It's just there for devs to use if they feel like it.

You do know that the 3D is completely optional, right?

That's like saying "I don't want to buy a 360 just to play that Kinect shit."

3D = optional.

I don't get it...

stick your console in a 3D TV and there you have it... right?...
No, a console has to be compatible with 3D to display in 3D. It's not as easy as just plugging in any system.

It's kind of like plugging in a Wii into an HD television and expecting it to be HD.

the ps3 didnt support 3D at launch it was something added later on trough update.

my opinion any console can do 3d, the wii can trough an update , but would probably run at half the speed & games would probably look like no more heroes tho.

but for wii u its more powerful than ps3 & ps3 supports it so it should be possible to run every current ps3 game that supports 3d with no probs that the ps3 has like slower frame rates, ect.
maby they will release a 3d update when more 3d tv are sold, or the wii u may support it from the start but there be an option to turn it on or off if you have 3d tv.

what i probably see in the future is either nintendo partner with a tv company that has a sterioscophic tv.
or nintendo may just release a firmware update that allows 3d when more 3d tvs are out.
or it may support it from the start & have the options but they just wont mess with it in any of there games lol.
one other thing im seeeing is when the console does have full 3d available for every game, them releaseing a 3d version on wii u controller with 3d cameras front & back.
& it supporting 3DS to be used, as a controller, wireless 3D camera, ect.
