I normally use hdmi cales in my tv but our big tv is old and only has component, works fine with other consoles but the wii u says that the cable only supports 480i and the option to change resolution is grayed out.... anyone know why?

also everything is in black and white....

Your cables may or may not be 5 RCA component, (Green, Blue, Red, White, Red) but your Wii U is detecting 3 RCA composite AV (Yellow, White, Red) for whatever reason. It could be a loose connection. The two cable types have different sense pins.

I just sold my old Zenith projection TV that supported 1080i with component cables. I had the cables for the Wii (not Wii U) and had this very issue and to fix it was a mystery, sometimes the 480p was grayed out (Wii only does 480p of course) and I was stuck with 480i but other times it would let me choose the 480p option. I never changed or tried any other cables.
