Hardware Wii Serial Codes?

Hey, my friend wants to buy a Wii - is there anyway to avoid the D2-3 Drive? I assume he'll need to buy a secondhand one. Is there a way to confirm what drive it would have in it from the serial number or something (without having to take the Wii apart)

to put bootmii as boot2 would be good as well, but playing Gamecube backups is top priority.

& wii will be form Australia PAL

Just get a used Gamecube, controller and mem card. Its dirt cheap.
To play GC backups on a wii, your still gonna need to buy a GC controller and mem card anyway.
And GC games are dirt cheap too.

true but space is an issue for him so that would never happen & even if it is cheap its still extra $$, not to mention those annoying tiny discs...

Any new Wii is gonna have the D3-2 DVD drive in it, they will not play ANY backup disc at all.
Best bet is to find a used one with the older drive in it.
Theres a website that lists the serial numbers of Wii's and what drives are in them, I cant link it for you, google it.

Okay, try going to a more obscure, less shopped at electronics shop (ie. not Dick Smith or JB Hifi), and see if they have any old Wii stock.
Easiest way to tell if they do or not is by looking at their games, and seeing if they're extremely out of date or not.
If so, it's very likely they've not been able to move their Wii consoles easily, and they'll have old Wiis instead of new Wiis.
It's not the best method, but it's the most likely way you'll get it. Avoid the city centers whereas possible.
Or if you want to be sure, go for a second hand Wii.

It's just really hard to find older Wiis with the backup capable drives now.

Best bet is to go on Craigslist and tell them to answer honestly how long they have had their wii and the longer the better.
