I bought my wii on launch day, and even leaving the Wii on Wiiconnect24, you know with yellow light, it will get hot. I don't know if this is common, but I bought a fan for my Wii.

Even after hours playing I never noticed any heat on my Wii. Then again, I never used that piece o crap WC24 so I dunno...
my old one overheated. With the new one I bought a fan with led's off ebay for 3 dollars and wired it to a power pack and made a little box on the bottom of the wii to push air through and out the back. the fan the wii comes with just doesnt do the job. now after hours of playing it stays cool....doesnt even get warm on the side. And it looks pretty cool.
