Wasn't Super Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars 2d?

You know, that game with Geno in it?

Unless you mean Platformers, since NSMB is on that list.

Obviously its Super Mario Bros. 3.

Deluxe kept me really busy for quite a while back in the GBC days.

It was basically the original Mario and the Lost Levels packed into one game with a bunch of extras.

Super Mario World followed by Super Mario Bros. 3.

I went with Super Mario World first as its a super long game, so many different levels, and after you beat it you can beat it again with "different" bad guys

Oddly enough, the most fun I had is with a Super MArio game not even listed:
That would be the first Super Mario Land on the game boy ( mono ).
I know it looks worse then anything else but still to this day every once in a while I pull it out and I manage to play trough the whole game in one session and finish it with 13-14 lifes !
That game was realy playable and I have fond memories of it.
Before that there was another Mario I was addicted too:
Mario Bros ( original coin-up version ) which is also not listed.
I had fun with that one as a kid when it was brand new in the arcade and I couln't stop playing it.
Then I had a lot of fun with Super Mario World, which is listed, closely followed by SM3 on the Snes all star edition ( the graphics are just incredible and the game his probably the most innovative one of the series )
So there you go:

1- Super Mario Land (GB)
2 -Mario Bros ( Arcade )
3 -Super Mario World ( Snes)
4 -Super Mario Bros 3 ( All Star edition Snes)

Ya see... there's one thing you guys aren't considering with your decisions. Replay value. The first Super Mario Bros has the MOST replay out of any of the mario games. Ok, so you beat Super Mario World (or NSMB) and you can go play to 100%. Then what?

I *still* go back and play SMB1 on a regular basis for two reasons. 1: Flying through levels, and getting faster at them.

And 2. Glitches, bitches! That game is so glitched out that you can play it in ways that weren't originally intended. Wall jumps, wall slides, and many other possibilities to unlock, all due to poor (at the time decent, but now) programming.

Love. It.

(but if we're just saying favorite of all time, then Super Mario World takes the cake... SMB1 is still a current-played game on my PC, work Mac, Smart Phone, DS and Wii

Super Mario World, and SMB3 comes at a close second. I find Super Mario World a bit more difficult, so it's a lot more fun for me. I've spent so many more hours on SMB3 though.

SMW and Yoshi's Island have always been my favorite.

Hard to choose just one, but I say Yoshi's Island.

Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels.

I enjoyed the challenging levels. Plus the few extra features in the game (the wind, poison mushroom) were pretty cool. The next would have to be SMB. It also has great levels (Especially near the end).

Simple. Which Mario 2D game is the best?
P.S Mario All Stars isnt in this one. Its because it is an anthology of games.

Yoshi's Island.

SMW was pretty meh, it was prettier, but it lost alot of what I loved about SMB3. Yoshi's Island was excellent except for those damned annoying babies!
