The real answer is probably not to update if you have a flash cart at all untill you have
checked it will support the pending patch.

In short "always update cartradges first".

or you actually use the eshop
This, times a million. For the past few months, my 3DS use has been nearly exclusively for eShop games, so this is a must for me. It's amazing how many great games there are (even disregarding DSiWare, 3D Classics, and Virtual Console) when you look. I still don't understand why so many people say the eShop selection is terrible, because it really does have a nice library of games (at least in the USA).

It certainly has way better options than the dsishop, I am actually quite impressed with the fact there are many different genres of game and not just puzzle games. But it still have less quality titles than retail carts, although this should change as now they releasing retail games in digital form

Personally I have the latest firmware update, and I shop at the eShop a lot. Great games, and it's my way of rewarding my daughter for good grades and conduct.

As a proud Japanese 3DS LL owner, I will say that the eShop is TERRIFIC. Unlike the US store, the Japanese eShop accepts international cards too.

However, the reason why I'm lazy to access is because of the difficulty of getting prepaid cards here. Even US region 3DS prepaids are scarce in Singapore, needless to say the JP ones.

I used to utilize a credit card for eShop purchases, but I stopped because I used my card for other purchases (my credit limit is quite low). It's a massive challenge to get JP eShop cards, and if you do get some they will normally be 2X the usual price.

Now you see why I'm a bit reluctant to buy from the eShop.

The American ones are everywhere here. Walmart has tons of them.

Our local distributor does not import these prepaids (AHEM MAXSHIT), so gamestores will have to rely on 3rd party American/Japanese exporters to get their hands on these prepaids.

These exporters want $ + the gamestore wants to earn $ = more $$ from you as a consumer.

When NOT to update your Nintendo 3DS.
If you intend to use flashcarts, "never" or "after they are updated to the firmware in question" - it's simple as that.

Nintendo is known to release bs updates like the one you mentioned, yes.

Seeing that the 3DS is not "hacked" yet, it's best to remain on the lowest possible firmware - the later the firmware the bigger the chance that certain exploits are patched. The 3DS already got all the "features" it lacked at launch, at this point, there's no need to update unless you have no intention whatsoever to hack it in the future.

Update only when you're forced to - aka, when a game requires an update to boot.
Do you mean actual physical 3ds game carts from the store, or eshop downloaded titles? Because I believe for hard copies of 3ds games, you have to be able to boot it without internet access, otherwise those without access to the internet would be screwed.

Store-bought games may contain updates as well - they will prompt you to update if they require a given firmware version and your version is older.

Actually majority of the new games do contain whatever the latest firmware is. People don't notice it cos they already updated it. There's no way to avoid it unless you don't wanna play newer games.

But wasn't the Super Mario 3D Land (Mouthfull to say) update specific to the card?

That was for MarioKart 7 for OS level online gaming. Some part of the November update was included in the 3D land cart first to kick off this feature.

The crown3ds will solve all of our problems no worrys! I know it is real and will be released on the 30th because my friends cousins uncles friends uncles maid is asian and crown3ds ppl are from china.

I'm Asian, and my parents are from china, and I say it'll be released tomorrow.

Will it?

I don't see how being Asian has any relation to this at all.

You're either a troll, or something else entirely.
Why did you lie and try and hurt our wonderful community?
