@TurdPooCharger

Do you really suspect they'll have resale value in a few years? I was under the impression that these things are mass produced and everyone must have one if even this 60+ year old has one. A few I own will probably have resale value but that's because they're antique and semi rare when they were made. But a 3DS?!
Few years from now? Oh no! Maybe not in your lifetime but in your great grandkittens or their litter. If the 3DS is to be looked back fondly someday like how we do so today for the Game Boy, pass yours down as a family heirloom or keepsake.

If you don't intend to leave behind the 3DS as a collector's item to be sold off later, go the sentimental value route: put some games you found enjoyable, leave some doodles, notes, voice recordings, pics, Miis modeled after you + others, etc.

No, I intend to leave them behind and not sell them. I like the idea of leaving doodles, notes, recordings, and pictures for them to dig into later. I've also been studiously beating games and leaving my saves behind for them to play on.

Well you've convinced me to get off my lazy fat butt and see about getting these things fixed up. I've got the time and the money, and I can't take the money with me when I vacate this place. Guess I'll look into how hard its going to be to fix these myself and how much its going to cost if I cant. Oh boy. Some of them don't even need fixed and just need replacement batteries.

Nah, I'm old for my family history. We have a habit of not making it much past 65 before congestive heart issues creep up. Plus I'm fat and diabetic.

I got a few years, but not much more.

On that note, is there a New Nintendo 3DS (NOT XL) teardown video or tutorial that isn't in German?

Oh thats sad to hear
I'm prepared. My affairs are in order, my ducks in a row, and I'm almost ready. I miss my wife dearly. I'm sure my kids and grandkids will miss me as well, but I've left a lasting impression on them and they've got plenty for memories and memorabilia.

Holy hell, there are THREE ribbon cables and a wireless cable that goes through that hinge. This is beyond my ability to fix, although I did narrow it down to what I believe is the screen ribbon cable, or whatever the bottom cable is. It has a nice bend in it from the factory. I think that cable is failing.

Here's pictures. Hopefully someone can confirm this so I can take it over to the uBreakiFix and let them do it.

Then I see that it looks like the middle ribbon cable might be pulling out, but I just cannot get it to slide back in. Heres a picture, but its not the best: https://imgur.com/vLUxfYA

Thanks for looking.

Edit: So, it must've been a loose connection. I've managed to get the middle cable seated. Turns out in the years I've owned it that the little flap that secures the ribbon cable connection had worked loose and wasn't securing the inside part of the ribbon cable. Luckily I have a tiny long spudger that allowed me to pop it down fully, grab the cable with a pair of long thin needle nose pliers and seat it and then push the flap closed. It no longer POPS and shuts off!

Also, for those pesky security screws that hold the SD card slot in (I'm not certain what they're called)... I've found that if you take a straight slot #1.5 and take it to a Dremel to cut a third of it off, it will get into one of the wings and bite really well. Picture of modification included. I'm positive that a #1 would work as well, but be aware that the head might actually be too thin to be effective in one of the wings.

Appreciate it. However, my console also the one with a dead NAND chip. I figure fixing the thing will cost about the same as replacing it with a similar model and I still have a 2DS XL I can play on.

All in all its had a good run. I'll toss it in the memories box next to my DS, GBA, Game Gear, and PSP that are also broken.
I'll buy it from you, if you're interested

No thanks. I appreciate the offer, but I seem to have gotten it mostly fixed. I'm positive the NAND chip is failing because it fails a NAND verification script during the Type 9 CTRTransfer. It also does some funky things when running on the NAND chip that it doesn't do when it runs on emuNAND on the SD card. I can deal with this for now though because it does what I need it to do. Play NES and SNES games.

I think I'd eventually like to get the NAND chip upgraded or just replaced with a stock one so I can give it to my 8 year old grandson Tyler. He's a Mario freak like I am.

And finally, since I don't have 100 posts yet, I'd rather not make deals on GBATemp and violate their rules. I'm new here and I'd like to stay around for a while.

:ohnoes:

Those pliers being anywhere near the motherboard gives me the heebie-jeebies.

For the Y tipped screws holding down the microSD card slot reader on the n3DS,
-or-
, don't know the exact Y / tri-wing size. The above listings are in the US, but there are cheaper listings shipped from China.

What's weird is this type of the screwdriver isn't typically found as a set. Other possible sizes are:
  • 1.0 mm
  • 2.0 mm (Y0)
  • 2.5 mm
Small enough flathead screwdriver works too.

Ah. From what i've seen, replacing a chip like that would either require a lot of new wiring, or some serious skill in micro soldering, so be careful!

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
