The gen 4 Pokemon remakes have been highly critisised and I agree they're low quality. What would you have done if you were the one remaking the games and quality was your top priority? Personally I would have done the following.

Go with a different graphical direction. Making 3D models so faithful to the original games' 2D sprites didn't work out well. On top of just the graphics alone I'd add Pokemon to the overworld to make it feel more alive. Like having flying types flying around in the air and perched on trees and rooftops. Water Pokemon jumping out the water. They would need to look like a natural part of the environment and not just magically appearing and disappearing like they did in the Sword and Shield wild area.

Make each city feel more unique. Gen 2 Pokemon did this with the best example being Ecruteak City being Japan themed and the remakes expanding on this theme.

Follow the Platinum route.

Add difficulty options. The base game was so boring then the Elite 4 had competitively optimised Pokemon.

Implement a real time battle system. This is a polarising decision but I just find turn based RPGs too boring.

Include Pokemon Stadium style minigames.

Expand Amity Square to actually be interesting.

Realistically Pokemon games will remain mediocre because people will buy them anyway but this is at least what I wish they would have been.

I was never a huge fan of gen 4, always found the roster of Pokemon particularly lacking in that gen with some of the least inspired designs in the entire series, so for a remake I'd want to expand the roster, maybe even add mega evolutions into the game to make the gen 4 mons more interesting. I just like mega evolutions tbh, I think they should be in every game.

I didn't even finish BD/SP, despite buying it (and regretting buying it), HG/SS and OR/AS were such great remakes and BD/SP just failed to bring anything new to warrant remakes while at the same time not even including all the content of the originals so that is definitely something they could have done better. The postgame content of OR/AS was good, so I want more of that.

I like the idea of pokemon go style but with the standard gameplay. Thanks for bringing this up!

See the big reason BDSP turned out so poorly was becuase of well.... how it was handled internally. ILCA (developer) was basically just thrown the original source code of Diamond and Pearl (not platinum) and told them to remake the games in a rather limited amount of time with a small budget. They were kinda fucked from the start. But yeah really the lack of all the Platinum stuff was probably the biggest fault.
