I don't think we have a topic on this, so here we go:

Mega Man 64 Recompiled is in its early stages, but a playable PC port is available for download.

I forget, how does Mega Man 64 compare to the PSOne original? Are there any improvements/downgrades compared to other versions?

For those that are unaware, Mega Man Legends was released on the PSOne, N64, PC, and PSP.

There has also been a project to revamp the old official PC port to make it work nicely with modern versions of Windows. So, I would also be curious how this PC port compares.

I hope this project doesn't further discourage Capcom from releasing their own official port on Steam or whatever.

I'm surprised Capcom hasn't released the PC version on GOG followed by Windows (with extra DRM). My understanding is that the Legends franchise was never a big performer. Not to mention the money that went into Legends 3, which was ultimately canned.

You never know these days, but I think that, for the foreseeable future, the fanbase will do the heavylifting to keep all three games from vanishing into obscurity.

It's surely only a matter of time? Mega Man Star Force Legacy Collection was just released; I can only imagine they don't want to risk impacting sales by releasing too much all at once.

Not super favorably. The N64's anti-aliasing makes all the textures look bad, since they're not meant to be anti-aliased; the sound quality of all the voice acting is dropped, and a few lines that were already low-quality on PS1 are pretty hard to understand on N64. IIRC the analog stick doesn't really add much, but I don't remember the N64 controls super well.

There's one cool visual effect that's broken in the official PC port, I'm not sure if it's right on N64 or not.

Here's hoping. Now that I think about it, wasn't Mega Man Legends on PSN? I don't really understand Sony's new website design because it feels like the PS Classics are buried. The real issue is that Legends 2 and Tron Bonne never got PC ports, so Capcom would need some real motivation to bring Legends 2 and Tron Bonne over.

Thanks for the run-down. I understand that recompilations are mod-friendly, so maybe some issues can be ironed out through mods.

Funny thing is, there was an incomplete Tron Bonne port in one of the big Capcom leaks many years ago. It must have been seriously incomplete or else I expect people would have quietly finished it and released it one way or another. That's why I'm wondering if that leak might have had something to do with the decision not to release a PC port long before now. But who knows?

I think the Tron Bonne source leak didn't make much of an impact because anyone that tries to use it will likely run into legal issues. I know ChrisNonyminus started a decomp of the original Mega Man Legends, but I have no idea how that project turned out. Without re-releases, we have a long road before the Mega Man Legends series gets decompiled. Since Capcom's a big outfit, even a "quick and simple" port of a PS1 game would come with a lot of red tape. (Now that I think about it, if they have the source code for Tron Bonne, it's possible they still have the source codes for Mega Man Legends 1 and 2 lying around.) Still, I'll stay hopeful.

IIRC Legends 2 did get a PC port, but only in greater Asia. As for PSN, yes, all three games are available on PS3 for $10 a pop, and they run damn near flawlessly.

Not strictly, the Perfect Dark PC port isn't super moddable. But, considering Anti-Aliasing is a video mode type thing, that's probably a disable-able setting from the port itself.

Thanks for the info. I didn't know that there was a PC version of Mega Man Legends 2 in Japan. The question is if that actually increases the probability of it being GOGified with English language support, English voice work, and compatibility fixes all added in.

The PC version was rated by the ESRB, and IIRC mentioned somewhere else (like the X5 PC instruction manual)

TIL

That said, I'd say a GOG release of the old ports is unlikely, considering they're prolly gonna drop a Legends Legacy Collection in the next year or two. Though not impossible, since GOG themselves apparently have more pushing power with Capcom than I would've thought

Last edited by LanHikariDS,
I some somebody ports this to Switch sooner or later once it's at a more advanced stage. This is by far one of my favourite games.

I still keep the original drop of the flood gate opening when vanilla Mario 64 had a PC release, it's just such an amazing piece of work, minimalist and more than enough at the same time with that 60fps mode. I don't need more, don't need HD this and fluffy that with hacks.

Mega Man 64 (and that Goemon 64 too) are a couple other basics I'd take just as is too, 60fps the thing, and leave it alone, or optionally alone. I'd play it again. I have had both the PS and N64 version, tinny audio aside and chunky FMV(seen in RE64 to fit) I take the N64 releases anyday the improvements here and there make a difference. I had no idea this one was being done, I didn't see it on this site that keeps a so called active list of these projects, so, thanks.

The PC version of Legends is so mediocre, it's been more fruitful to pursue these projects (rather than modding the old port)

Honestly, I kinda agree with you in that I don't care for a lot of the recomps coming out, but the games that I'd rather get recompiled are usually for multiplayer stuff. Like, online for Perfect Dark, 007 Nightfire, Time Crisis. A lot of the single-player stuff like Animal Crossing, Mega Man Legends, I'll just stick to the original games tbh, the ports don't really do anything for me.

Yeah I've read that, a lot. I've researched it in the past when I came across the MMX 1 and 3 US ports and saw how functional at best it was, but once I realized delusional fanboys were paying over $100 for a hot piece of garbage I wrote it off. So you're totally right, this is the most idea thing possible, work the good source material and max it in good ways as this does.

I can't stand most of them, too much bs. I just want what I said basically. The game, 60fps capped, higher resolution output, but I don't need a bunch of fluff, added textures, and other unnatural stuff. I would be 100% cool with an online multiplayer mechanic, even if I didn't care to use it, imagine all those Goldeneye lovers going ham over that online.
