that's what I'm trying to tell you , its not there.

there are 4 things

BACK
ABOUT
RELOAD
EXIT

no bootmii, and why its not there is what I'm trying to figure out.

ok, I turned off the power and re-started it and the bootmii came up.

dumping the NAND now. however, there's a couple of things that were different from what the tutorial said.

first , it doesn't tell you to restart the wii .
and secondly, I had installed the bootmii as boot2 but I still wasn't able to use the wii remote to navigate the menu's. luckily I have a GC remote and that's what I had to use.

My 2GB card got filled up in seconds.....so get atleast 4GB or two 2GB...one with apps and stuff and one with wad's and roms

You didn't install it as an ios. Reboot your wii, bootmii should be there.

I know , that's what I said. I installed it as boot2 , but I still had to use the GC controller.

I have an 8GB micro sd I bought for like $20 at walmart and an adapter that came free with something (both sandisk) that I use for homebrew, I dont use much of the space on it unless i am dumping games for backup.

I also have a 250GB external hard drive setup for game backups. I have a bunch of spare drives from upgrading (250 was my smallest) and the external enclosure cost $30, so my setup was $50.

Also, concerning bootmii If you install it as boot2 it will not show up in the homebrew channel, if you install it as IOS it will.

I figured that out after a few tries , thanks .

I have another question. I'm kinda unsure about the preloader and if its going to be ok to install it on my system since its a 3.1U menu.

I read this post (#13 in the thread stickied by Deviyl) where the guy says this.

"I can't agree with you on this one. What if someone has a system menu prior to 3.2 ??
They would be missing a lot of IOS's for some games to run properly.

And what happens if you install Preloader on a System Menu prior to 3.2 ? Could be dangerous IMHO.
And do you have a HACKS.INI that works on 3.1 / 3.3 / 3.4 ??"

so is it ok to install it on a 3.1U system or do I need to do something else first?

I wouldn't bother trying to. Either update yourself to 4.0/4.1 properly and then do it or just leave it. You have enough brick protection with boot2 bootmii. Also your Wiimote doesn't work because bootmii doesn't support Wiimotes. At all. It can't get access to it at that point and likely never will. You can also use the power button to move right and reset button to select from your wii itself though.

ok. I wasn't going to do it since it said its not absolutely necessary but then he mentions this

"I know. =P I even stated that in the guide. But for people that have to install BootMii as boot2-- if they brick their Wii, there isn't another way to get to HBC without PreLoader, so they'd need it. But other than that, I pointed out that it's not necessary. But then.. if you're really feelin' lucky, you really don't need BootMii or a NAND backup either."

I think I'll do as you said then and upgrade to 4.1 , and then install the preloader.

apprec for the replies everyone , by the way.

ok, I'm again a bit unsure of what my next step should be .

I did
1. getting homebrew and bootmii
2. backing up the NAND

I was going to install preloader , 'til nabster said to upgrade to 4.0/4.1
I wanted to know if I should be doing this first

" Patching IOS36
WARNING: SPOILER INSIDE

IOS36 will need to be pacthed on newer Wiis, but it won't hurt to do it on all Wiis, so I'll just put the steps here anyway. If you think you don't need it, you can skip this-- but if the next steps don't work, come back here. =)

Things you'll need:
1) SD card with a folder called apps on its root.
2) Trucha Bug Restorer.
3) If your Wii does not have internet, you will need to create the necessary wad files on the root of your SD (these are merely the files your Wii would normally download if it has an internet connection. Create them here!

Steps:

* Extract the files from the downloaded Trucha Bug Restorer zip.
* Copy the TBR folder to the apps folder on your SD card.
* Start HBC
* Load TBR
* Use IOS 36 to downgrade 15.

OK if you're on 3.1, you don't need to use the Trucha Bug Restorer, you already HAVE the trucha bug on every IOS. What you should do from that point is run the cIOS rev14 installer and just have that select any 2 digit IOS like IOS36 or something then have it do a network installation instead of a wad installation (assuming you have wifi).

Then from that point you can follow my section on Waninkoko's 4.1 updater and dop-IOS to update to 4.1. (from my guide in my sig)

In your case from 3.1 if you have wifi, you would run the 4.0 updater and then run the 4.1 updater. The reason you can't just run the 4.1 updater is because it will give you an error if you try to update with it without having IOS60 installed first. You could also just do that and install the most recent IOS60 wit dop-IOS and then run the 4.1 updater, but just go with the 4.0 updater then 4.1 updater because it's easier to understand.

Then run dop-IOSv7 and install the most recent IOS60 with the sig hash check. If you want to you can use that to look through the other IOS's and update anything else that needs updating, but that isn't really all that necessary I suppose.

Actually since you wouldn't have used the Trucha Bug Restorer, at that point you should also use dop-IOS to install the most recent IOS36 with the sig hash check and ES_Identify patch.

Then from that point you can install preloader.

Regarding this quote: "I know.

I'm pretty sure whoever said that made a typo and meant to say "But for people that have to install BootMii as IOS" not boot2.

If a Wii with boot2 bootmii is bricked you can still access the HBC (provided the IOS it needs wasn't deleted in the process of bricking) and even in that case you can just use bootmii to do a NAND restore of that backup you made. If you only have it installed as an IOS, then yes preloader would be your only option for brick protection.

I feel like I'm in a round room trying to piss in a corner FFsake.

I'm just gong around in circles here.

anyone got a link to a up-to-date video tutorial ?

I've been reading these tutorials for hours and trying to figure out what the hell I'm doing.

I need some help updating to 4.1 menu

What is it that you don't understand? That simplistic mod guide is pretty straightforward with pictures to make the only confusing part with getting the files more clear (for the offline guide).

You just need to use NUSD to get the following files as stated in the guide:

navigate to system, system menu, choose v449 [4.1u] [[450 4.1e for pal users]] and click start NUS Download.

navigate to IOS, IOS 38, choose v3610 and click start NUS Download.

on this last one, make sure to uncheck pack -> wad
navigate to IOS, IOS 60, choose v6174 and click start NUS Download.

And then,
In each of those folders [with the exception of 000000010000003Cv6174], there is some files and a .wad.
Take the .wad out of each folder and place them on the root of your sd card.
When all 5 files are there, grab the "System Menu-NUS-v449.wad" [or System Menu-NUS-v450.wad for pal users] and place it in the folder called "wad" on the root of your sd card.
Copy the contents of the 000000010000003Cv6174 folder to the 00000001>0000003c>v6174 folder. [important]

That should be the only possibly confusing part about this and it has nothing to do with actually doing anything on your Wii yet.

Once you actually get the files properly, all you should need to do at that point is:

Run CIOSrev14 installer
Choose IOS36 and press A.
Choose WAD install and press A.

Run Dop-IOS v7
Press right until you see IOS60.
Press A to select yes for everything.
Let it install.

Run Wad Manager
When it opens choose use IOS249. (it is probably already set to that)
Press A to open from SD.
Install System Menu-NUS-v449.wad [or System Menu-NUS-v450.wad for pal users] and exit.

And you will be on 4.1 and can proceed to install preloader if you want to.

If you CAN get internet on your Wii then all you need to do is run the necessary apps from the Wii and have them download the files they need themselves.

Just ask about what you're confused about, it's more likely that you'll get a clear answer here than it is finding a video doing exactly what you need especially without wifi.

this may seem like a stupid question , but I'm gonna ask anyways.

"Copy the contents of the 000000010000003Cv6174 folder to the 00000001>0000003c>v6174 folder. [important]"

does the above statement mean I'm supposed to create a 00000001 folder with 0000003c folder inside that and another folder inside that named v6174?

thats what I did eventually, but the way its worded made me think the folder was already there somewhere so I was looking for it instead of just making the folder.

"If you CAN get internet on your Wii"

I keep seeing this and I keep saying I don't have wifi access with my wii. So , every time I try to do the next step I have to find a way to do it without wifi.

the readme that came with cIOS installer , doesn't give me an alternate way of using it.

also , why are those readme's like one big run-on sentence ? its no wonder nobody reads them. I have to use the cursor and put some spaces in them just to read them.

Yes that's how that folder structure is supposed to be set up 00000001 \ 0000003c \ v6174 probably would have been a better denotation.

Well I already told you everything you need to do offline. That statement was just to say if you DID have it you wouldn't need to bother getting those files yourself.

And the readme's come out like that because you're using a crappy editor like notepad or something to open it. If you open it with textpad (or even wordpad) it will look normal.

The cIOS installer will work without wifi. That's why you needed to get that IOS38 wad. After you put that wad on the root of your SD card, you run the installer and select IOS36 (or any 2 digit IOS pretty much) and then choose wad installation instead of network installation. By doing wad installation it does it offline by using that wad on your sd card instead of doing it online and downloading that wad itself.

Edit: So again, if you already got those files through NUSD, all you need to do at this point is get the wad for IOS38 v3610 and put that on the root of your sd card, put the System Menu-NUS-v449.wad in the "WAD" folder which should be on the root of your sd card, and put the contents of that IOS60 folder in the structure you said above (00000001 \ 0000003c \ v6174).

You also need to get those three applications you will be using and put them on your sd card properly in the apps folder (cIOS rev14 installer, dop-IOSv7, and Wad Manager 1.4 or 1.5)

Then just do these steps on your Wii running them through the HBC:

Run CIOSrev14 installer
Choose IOS36 and press A.
Choose WAD install and press A.

Run Dop-IOS v7
Press right until you see IOS60.
Press A to select yes for everything.
Let it install.

Run Wad Manager
When it opens choose use IOS249. (it is probably already set to that)
Press A to open from SD.
Install System Menu-NUS-v449.wad [or System Menu-NUS-v450.wad for pal users] and exit.

All of those steps are done as stated and will work offline as long as you got those files above.

ok, I think I've got it.

I finally got it working.

I have another question , though.

I had asked if it was necessary to leave the sd card in there after and wa told it wasn't necessary. but when I tried it without the card in the slot , none of the apps showed up.

I originally put homebrew on my wii with with a 16 MB sd-card.
So your 256MB card will work.
Still, to make a nand backup a 1GB or bigger card is required.
You can use the card from your camera for homebrew and then put it back into the camera.

Zelda isn't needed any more, u can use bannerbomb or the SSBB hack.

After softmodding an sd card isn't needed.

when you launch homebrew , isn't it reading from the SD card ?

or should I copy the apps to the wii memory or something?

The SD card is needed to run anything from the HBC. If you have a wad channel that isn't a forwarder channel of an application you can install that and that wouldn't need an SD card. The application would then be a new channel on your Wii system menu. Make sure that whatever wad you get is tested and legit before installing it though or at least make sure you have preloader or bootmii installed to boot2 first. Certain applications might still need to read things from an SD card though like USB loaders and such might need the SD card to store it's config files and covers and such.
