Yeah, time marches on, things change. A lot more people in the community have developed more anarcho-socialist and anti-commerce views, and honestly with how shitty online commercial practices of selling software has become I don't blame them.
Bleem came into a world where the idea of Shareware and FOSS, while it did exist, was essentially unheard of by everyday people, most people were conditioned early on that software was something to buy,
and if you weren't buying it, that was wrong. That has changed and since we have a more widespread understanding of free software, both as a lack of cost but also open for collaboration and remixing. I understand exactly why people would hate Bleem if it came out these days and they fucking should.
It was a different world with different rules back then, and the Homebrew scene wasn't what it is now, and in many ways that's a good thing.
