This. Plus, the nostalgia, I always went with Cyndaquil back in the day.

I have to say I'm gonna go with Chikorita.
I actually went with Cyndaquil on the Japanese version so I want to try something different. Went with Piplup on Diamond, haven't gone with a grass starter before (but do have a forced encounter Bulbasaur and love it along with the other original starters my team is made of.)
Not sure if it'd be considered a spoiler or not... but just to be safe for those who care.
When I get to go back and pick one of the Red/Blue starters I'm going Charmander. He's who I got in my first game so I have a special attachment to the little guy.

Well, I think they are all good, due to them being pure breed Pokemon with only being consistently one type all through their evolution chain.

But think it'll be;

HG: Cyndaquil
SS: Totodile

I usually pick water pokemon, but I also like Cyndaquil. This one and Red/Blue are the only ones I have trouble deciding... I like Squirtle, Charmander, Totodile, and Cyndaquil pretty much equally. The other two generations have only one starter as far as I'm concerned (Torchic and Piplup).

probably whoever the water one is, I always seem to pick those for some reason (except for ruby where I picked the fire chicken (at least I think that was ruby?))

Tododile. I'm gonna make a team of stage 1 Pokemon.

I want to try Chikorita as well, however.

if heartgold,

u get red gyardos later on in the game
you get ho-oh later on at lv 40

so chikorita.

=============

BUT, gyarados doesn't really have any water attacks and its special atk is pretty weak.

so maybe totodile
