It can "Switch" from being a portable console, to being a home console. That's it's main gimmick. Really depends if you're a portable gamer or not. If not, then an Xbox or PS4/5 might be a better choice for you.
It also depends what games he wants to play. Not the same games are offered on Xbox and PS4/5 versus the Switch. OP has to do his homework and check what he needs to play before making a decision.

Switch does have gyro sensors in the controllers so yeah, though not many games use it. You won't see motion controls outside of party games besides a limited list of Nintendo published games and games that support gyro aiming for shooting.
let me consider that, hmm not sure i would go for it

Well, it matters on what you want to play for it.

If you want to play nintendo exclusives at a cheaper price as well as 100% compadibility then go ahead.

If not, your better off buying a steam deck for some more. Emulates Switch, 360, PS2, Wii U/Wii/Gamecube as well as playing steam games off the fly

What's special about it? You can play more powerful games than what the 3DS was able to do, but only barely better than the Wii U... so if you don't care for any of the N64 games on Switch Online or Switch Exclusives I'd just get a 3DS for the amount of stuff you can get, which is hurriedly getting harder for most because of the eShop shutting down.

I found myself really enjoying the portable aspect more than I thought I would. I can play in bed and have some relaxation with games like spirit farer or play out on the deck in the rain with games like spirit farer. I like spirit farer lol. Seriously though I got it so I could play Mario kart 8 and then later got other games before taking it and using it in handheld. I find the flexibility its greatest feature.

Same here. I bought the Switch expecting to use it docked 100% of the time but turns out I use it 70/30 handheld vs docked since getting mine back in 2018.

Well if you like playing games on the go or even just lying down on a couch without a TV like the Romans would have played games, I could give you 4,418 special reasons:
