I have a NDSi XL, i have a pretty good idea of what to do but where do i start? I want to be able to run NDS roms off of a flashcart and SD card.

I am not experienced with flashcarts, but you should start with https://dsi.cfw.guide, which will guide you through installing Unlaunch, which will unblock flashcarts, among other things.
Optionally, you can also install HiyaCFW to bring back the menu sounds and use a SDNAND for protection of your system's health.
TWLMenu++ will allow you to play most games via your SD slot, along with use emulators like nesDS and a GBA hypervisor, GBARunner2. You can also run some standard homebrew.

Pro ultra tip: eat a bunch of Skittles or imitation gold flakes before leaving a duece in the shower for girlfriend, makes it flashy and classy.
