Hardware What does 3DS really mean?

Does 3DS stand for 3 Dimensional System, or 3D System, Or does it even have a full name is 3DS it's full name because the NDS the DS didn't have a meaning soo... Would the DS in 3DS have a meaning or am I just over thinking all of this? I just got to thinking about it and I really don't understand was it Just coincidence or did Nintendo really do that intentionally? Just something to get you thinking.

Nintendo Dual Screen.

As for '3DS'. 3 Dual Screen wouldn't make sense. Then again, nothing Nintendo does makes sense anyway.

Maybe 3D Screen=3DS?
DS means Dual Screen so i would say 3DS means 3D Screen cause they made a big thing about it.

It means a cross of 3D and DS, because it's still a DS (Dual screen), and it fully utilizes 3D games. They just spliced "3D" and "DS" into "3DS" because "3DDS" looks and sounds strange.

I always thought that was common knowledge.

That's always what I thought... ever since the DS Lite I bought on launch (my first entry into the DS world.)

Nintendo Dual Screen sounds pretty badass, but I think DS is easier and more unique of a household name.

Its a word play:
Nintendo Dual Screen = NDS or Nitnendo DS
then there is the 3D aspect of the DS so instead of 3DDS they played with that and caleld it 3DS..

A regular DS stands for Dual Screen. Nintendo Dual Screen (Nintendo DS). Now, remember a thread made by a fool who had problems with abbreviations back in November? Yeah. Nintendo 3DS is just a Dual Screen, but 3D. 3D, was combined into the S as in Screen.

Well, first off, realize that "DS" stood for either/both "Dual Screen" or "Developers' System"

Realize also that the 3DS is also the 3rd generation of the DS family, gen1 being "DS/Lite", gen2 being "DSi/XL", and gen3 being "3DS/XL"

Also that it is 3D, the name 3DS being a combination of "3D" and "DS"

"3 Dual Screen" would imply six screens. " "3 Developers' System" makes equally as little sense.

Try telling that to all of the "less than educated individuals" who still come in to work to buy these, but still call them "3DDS". -___-

Or, even better... either "3DSi" or "3DDSi" or "The Nintendo 3"

I think it means Nintendo was too lazy to come up with a better title for the system so they made a pun. 3DS, DS meaning dual screen 3D meaning 3 Dimensional, thus as a pun they threw the 3 in front of the DS to make 3DS.
