As for NPCs, staying away from stereotypes can be difficult, but is always welcome.

Are stereotypes bad then? Sometimes they exist, even the "negative" (quotes because that can be a seriously debatable aspect) ones, or indeed merely could exist, and would thus seem to be within the remit of inclusion within a work.

Additionally, very few parts of the world were ever completely homogeneous where race was concerned, so it's nothing worth screeching about.
This - historically there has been much more racial mixing in most parts of the world for much longer than most people would expect. Enough so to make the thread's whole argument pretty moot, without having to even mention that it tends to label the arguer with a "potential racist" flag.
