I just beat Portal (hilariously awesome game) and I'm moving on to Half Life... I never played the first game, but so far Half Life 2 is pretty good. The beginning is a little boring because you're just running and running from the cops... but the story seems pretty good! The graphics are great too. Have any of you guys played the entire series? How is it? Does it get better later on?

I just got the orange box too. Im in the same position (not sexual) as you are now. I started HL2 a while ago and haven't played the first yet. I'm not blown away but I do see why people like it so much. To me, its far from a perfect game. I hate the collision detection (if that the right term for it). When you walk through a door I always get stuck by the damn wall. Thats the only real problem I have with the game. Im sure I could go deeper but you should get the idea of what I think.

I just got to the part where you get a Gravity Gun and it's... alright. I'm just a little bored because I've been on a goddamn jet ski thing dodging the incoming attacks from a helicopter for like the past 2 hours. It was difficult, long, and tedious :\ But I finally reached my destination so HOPEFULLY it will get better...

Eventually you will get past the jet ski thing section of the game. It seems like an eternity though. Everyone who plays the game can agree, this section of the game goes on for what seems like forever. It took me days to build up the patience to complete it (mostly just because of one truly annoying scene with 2 tanks which I just couldn't figure out)
Overall its a great game. Sometimes it feels kinda generic to me, but the settings and story-line are very well done. I am especially impressed with some of the puzzles, which I usually hate in FPS's.

HL2 is one of my favourite games, in fact I am playing through it again. There isn't any collision problems on the PC version.
Comparing the original HL to HL2 there isn't as many puzzles in the original and support characters aren't there much either.
The thing that's annoying about EP1 and EP2 is they are short and they were released about 18 months apart and so far its been over a year and no EP3

. Just be glad you have EP1 and 2 cause they don't end the story its a setup for the next game.
You will have another vehicle section but that is a car and half way through you get a gun on it.

I think Half-Life 2 is the best FPS game ever made. I am talking about the PC version here btw. Story, different scenes, characters, story ,graphics, puzzles, ???, profit; it was all there! The game came out in November 2004 and still it can keep up with modern day graphics. (I could go on about this game and defend why the hovercraft scene wás awesome and the "intro" part with the running was very smart, but i wont)

HL1 is very different, there is less story, but more shooting, jumping, puzzling. In November 1998 it was epic new and fresh even on the story part! I loved it too

Anyway if you have HL2 for pc you should really check out the mod "black mesa" (the lab name where most of HL1 takes place) it is a recreation of the original for the HL2 engine. But this mod team is putting SOOOO much more effort in to it then vavle did with Half Life: Source.

-->>the mod is not out yet!

I like Half-Life, but it has too many white people. There's like, only one black guy who doesn't do much and that makes me sad. Of course HL2:Ep 3 will have the Demoman and Cory, which is pretty rad.

portal was awsome. HL2's gameplay gets a little repetitive after a while (kinda like doom 3). you may want to play it anyway to see what all the hype is about.

eh? If you mean Portal on the 360 then If I was you i'd return your bugged copy. If you have completed Portal you would have the heartbroken achievement. :/

Moving on, I agree on Half Life's beginning is boring. So boring infact that I have yet to complete the game. I haven't touched it for ages.

half life 1 is the one i remember with the most fond memories - It was ground breaking for it's time, the fighting with the marines seems superior to fighting combine soldiers. The scripted scenes with marines fighting aliens seem unmatched by the newer games. I also prefer the enviornment of underground reseach centre over rusty ruins. Although the alien levels towards the end of HL1 were awful

the gravity gun is nice but gets old, too a little is elaborated on the plot in regards to what's happened since HL1

I think Half Life has one of the most interesting and complex storylines ever. Couple that with excellent puzzle solving elements and awesome gunfights, I think the Half Life series is one of the best in the world.

Erm... well, my copy is a "backup" so I can't "return" it. Why should I? Yes, I did beat it o the 360, and yes, I did get the Heartbroken achievement... o-o

The first Half-life was pretty groundbreaking when it came out - no load times between levels, great storytelling, intelligent ai. HL2 is great too but I totally agree, the first half is really boring. Episode 1 and 2 are really great though. I love the series overall.

Check out Freeman's Mind for some HL humour:

I love the series, specially HL2 and the Episodes, regardless of what many people in this thread say. Sometimes, mostly during the vehicle sequences, it does get a tad tedious. That, and the fact that most of the HL1 story was filled post-facto are the only two weak points I see in this series.

PS: BTW, the 3 Episodes are, in fact, Half-Life 3. Gabe Newell, Valve CEO aka "the man with no neck", said so. They are releasing them as episodic content to save the players from the six-year gap between HL1 and HL2.

I've been doing the part with the car for an hour or so... it's not as bad as when I had to use the swamp-mobile... but yeah, I'm loving the game so far. Good graphics, story, weapons, intelligent AI... etc.

I was wondering... is there any way to use mods in the 360 version? I remember seeing this awesome mod (dunno if for PC or 360) where a guy was playing through the game with the portal gun from Portal! It was really cool. For example, the video showed him at the beginning where you're in a building aand a guard is standing next to a trash can... the guard throws a piece of trash at you... the guy made a portal under it and one above the trash can and dropped the piece of trash in the can like that xD It was really cool. Is something like that possible in the 360 version?

The second one will probably not be a good game if you havent played the first, buy the second game is SERIOUSLY amazing, sure the first two levels are running from cops, but once you get to the coast, the game gets AMAZING

@SylverReZ, I also heard one of the Prince of Persia games was so unfinished that it required the "24/7 online" drm so a puzzle could be done and the game could be finished. And that when the Ubisoft servers were closed the (cracked) game was impossible to finish or something like that
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, That's extra scummy. Ubisoft nowadays ship out incomplete games like Skull and Bones which was being worked on for nearly a decade now.
