They are mostly used for cell phones, because cell phones have a tiny amount of internal storage and with all the new phone features like built in mp3 players and video cameras, you need more storage. space

...even less people use it on PSPs than they do on DSs. Because the PSP has another type of memory that is just as good and requires no adapters! imagine that!

And what do you mean by portable memory? Isn't a microSD card, because of the fact that you can pick it up and carry it to any other computer with extreme ease, portable?

Sony's asshat memory sticks are not as good as a straight SD card.
Sony's crap only works with their stuff - the PSP and Cybershot cameras (I had both, the CS died and I gave the PSP away, leaving me with those utterly useless cards).

Anyway, I can't speak for the U.S. but my phone here has a dedicated MP3 player (I prefer my iPod's interface, but I considered using my phone as an MP3 player when it died), a 2MP camera (my friend bought a top of the line phone with a 5MP camera), video, and as much crap as my friends will send me. Print club sticker booths have been able to mail the photos to your phone for a while, but when I was in Tokyo last week I saw for the first time the booths using infrared to send the photos right to your phone. All that stuff benefits from having a big card, especially if the phone is the only way you regularly get on the internet.
