So the main unit for the home theater system my parents used, a Philips MX5600/37 (very much outdated but worked well for this long), has gone out, first with the disc changer being unable to even eject the discs or even read them, and with my father having passed away months ago, my mom is left with this situation. I'm trying to help her decide what she wants to do. She wants to keep the surround sound system because it works so well, but the connections for that are of the old speaker systems with exposed cable and jacks in the unit (in image below on the left).
She wants to get a new player from Costco (being an elderly widow with not much disposable income), but what she's looking at are not home theater units, they lack the kind of connections needed.
I guess what I want to ask is, is there a (cheap enough) converter or something that could extract 5.1 surround sound out of HDMI to be used with the surround sound speakers she has? If money wasn't an issue, she'd probably replace it all, but she can't. She'd have to make due with the HDMI-to-RCA converter my dad bought not long before his passing until she can save enough for a new TV that would have HDMI-in on it.
