Check out 999 and this site: http://vndb.org/

With VNDS you can read ported visual novels for PC with your DS.

Are you aware of those that were converted for vnds? To the best if my knowledge these are translated.
Beyond them, well I don't really know.

As people said already, google the VNDS program - several free translated Visual Novels have been converted into DS format...

Also, I love VNs as well so these are probably the closest things I could find on DS (that are in English):

    Ace Attorney Series
    Hotel Dusk: Room 215
    Last Window (Sequel to H.D)
    Another Code (or Trace Memory)
999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors
    Time Hollow
    Lux-Pain

I know most of those aren't 100% VNs, but they have very strong text/story elements.

(Lux-Pain is extreeemely close to a VN, but unfortunately the translation is quite poorly done. If you don't mind typos and sometimes confusing dialogue, then definitely try that [IMG])

That's not really a VN... But I guess it's sort of similar? :S
