Hello everyone.

Edit: I've been told not to post any kind of advertisement without permission, of which I did not know I couldn't do. To satisfy this, I have removed this post.

Thank you everyone who has read this far and from all of us over at Vesticore Media, have a great day.

Advertising & Requests

Members are not allowed to create topics or posts intended only to promote or advertise their own or any website(s) without staff permission. If permission is given members are required to provide the name of the staff member who allowed the advert in their post.

As long as the advert is non-obtrusive and does not contain links to warez of any kind, members may link to their own website, forum, or venture in their signature and profile ONLY.

Begging in the forums for anything is not allowed. This includes, but is not limited to: asking users to visit a website for the member to gain points/etc, begging to become a staff member, torrent invite, translation, and dump requests, and especially pyramid schemes; where you are asking members to help you out by registering places, visiting certain websites, etc.

Ask a mod first in this case.

We need a new rule about things like this. Currently it's allowed to post threads about Kickstarter/Indiegogo projects and campaigns, but only if you're not affiliated with them yourself. I think we should allow people to post their projects (with certain restrictions, of course).

He's free to put a link in his signature and engage in discussions to give it some screen time, but I agree that Kickstarters don't actually equate to selling anything, rather promoting a project that may or may not result in a finished product. I wonder what the higher-ups would have to say about the matter, seeing that crowd funding is a pretty big deal these days.

Crowd funding is a matter of trust in the long term. Considering the last few years of GBAtemp history where we've been duped by fellow members. I think the answer is to make personal crowd funding fully under the advertising rule (with hard language) where approval is required for any posts, but signature use is just fine.

The GBATemp is not in charge of its user's wallets - anyone has a right to spend their money however they please. It would be a matter of trust if GBATemp as an entity would be directly involved in a given project and would actively advertise it. When it's a given user's thread, it's the user who is the sole responsible individual for its contents, the rest is a matter of the rules board.

I find it quite interesting actually that this conversation as arisen. I had put two links in the post and had politely asked that if people had experience with 2D tile coding for Unity if they could respond to this thread. The two links were to my teams website and to the IndieGoGo campaign. I am affiliated with both obviously but I'm not saying "Oh when you click this you have to do this", which is what I'm assuming has been the majority of cases previously. In any case, I will see about restoring the post, though to my knowledge, and I'm not fighting the rules here, at least not intentionally, at least to my knowledge that it's not harmful or forceful with both language used and commitment upon entering either site.

If you're looking for coders who have experience with Unity, you might want to make a thread in the Computers and Technology board and make it strictly about development, the IndieGoGo campaign and your website have to be in your signature unless the higher-ups allow you to do otherwise. Sorry for the obstructions - you know how things are with crowd funding. Young developers tend to start projects, ask for money, get funding and vanish 9 out of 10 times, so the rules are stingy regarding such matters.

Thank you, I will indeed do that for the Unity problem. As for the links, I have asked a staff member about it and if I am allowed to put the presumed offending text back, I will remove the Unity request from it.

Oh yes, I know that, but I think the rules are fine as is with necessary approval. But I guess since GBAtemp doesn't manage their user's wallets it would then be okay for me to advertise personal projects with paypal donation pages. At the end of the day it operates on a vague promise and I think that requires a certain amount of attentiveness from the staff.

Theiket: I apologize for the derail. I have no issue with you or your project at all, but I do wish to see the rules followed in this case. It doesn't matter what language is in your post, if I kindly begged for money to start a website, it doesn't change the fact that I am asking through active advertisement. And 'Offending" is such an odd word for this. Your post is not offending anyone, rather it is violating part of GBAtemp's ToS which is kinda ambiguous here to be honest. However, staff precedent seems to say they really want approval before you post.

EDIT: Good man. I hope for a speedy resolution so you can get your members and funding.

Oh, definitely - such threads would be under the staff's scrutiny, just like any other thread. All I'm saying is that the times go on and the forum has to adapt. ;)

Agreed, unfortunately some things are just better done with human attentiveness and a believe anything which asks for money falls under this category. I have to ask, how do you view this same issue in signatures?

I don't think that a link that's 15 pixels lower is any less effective than one that's in the main post. We're a games-oriented and homebrew-oriented community, our users sometimes engage in projects and sometimes promoting them leads to prolific discussion. Yes, many developers "leg it" with the money, I'll willingly admit that, but we have to adapt to the current trend (which is crowd funding) and I believe it's the individual user's choice to fund a given campaign. We're definitely not going to actively advertise anything that's not surefire, but I don't see too much harm in just showing off interesting projects, along the lines of "Hey guys, this is what I'm working on, you can chip in if you'd like!". No begging, just an open offer.

Theiket I read you've already contacted other staff about this, though I'm not sure who. Regardless, by all means wait for their reply and see what they have to say on the matter, though for what it's worth by previous cases of this we do generally apply the "advertising" rule to it. Do note though that again, as per the rules, you are allowed to link/promote it in your signature. As long as what you are writing or linking to do not break any of the other rules (no warez, pornography, racism/hate speech, etc; keep in mind people of all ages and walks of life use the forum; also size constraints on images in signature) then you are pretty much free to do what you want with your signature. Through this, if you post and become an active member with thoughtful contributions to the discussion, many people are likely going to see it.

Until another staff member who you have contacted deems it okay, I am going to have to again say that making a topic promoting this is in violation of the rules. If you've got any more questions, feel free to contact me or any other staff member via PM :)

Sterling this kind of answers your question too.

Sickly's right - the more you share and discuss with other members of the community the more interest you'll generate, plus you might end up meeting some new friends and engaging in some prolific discussions while you're at it.

Sicklyboy: I already knew the answer for that lol. I was interested in Foxi's opinions as to what the potential ramifications of the signature rules were since we were talking about staff attentiveness.

EDIT: Also, as soon as a staff member posts the okay, I'll sweep my previous posts away to facilitate discussion instead of derailment.

The tl;dr version of the rules that apply to signatures is "unless it's a blatant PayPal button with "gibe moni pls or i repot u" I think we can let it slide", there's a difference between advertising or begging and healthy promotion of something you worked on and are proud of.

That's what I figured, and there's nothing wrong with it. I just wanted to hear what your thoughts were.

Well I don't know if you guys can tell or not, but I have added my teams website to my signature, along with a short description of what we aim to do. I have added onto my site an image that when clicked on, will take you to the funding page. And if people don't recognise that, there's helpful text above it. Hopefully mentioning what new additions I have made doesn't cross a line, though I get the feeling it doesn't.

Oh yes, that's perfect. Though I would align the text below the header with the left (and/or insert a quote box with the text in it). It looks more professional and clean. Also, make sure you remove any formatting if the text was copied from offsite. It'll ensure anyone with the dark theme will see your sig.
