Hi,
Thanks in advance for tolerance. Please bare with me regarding terminology as I don't have the best grasp of how the mods work. I'm pretty good with directions and can usually get to where I need to go with step by step guides. In this case I successfully installed cfw on a 3DS following the 3ds.hacks.guide. I later installed the TwilightMenu++ to play .nds and .nes of the SD. Everything is working but i think cheats would be easier to work with using a flashcart. I purchased a r4i-gold-3ds and have been trying to determine exactly what if anything I would need to do to make it functional with my system. My hope is that I can play DS, NES, and SNES off the flashcart and utilize cheats for all. Can you guys walk me through what I'd need to do at this point as in loading any files or applications and/or setting up any folder structures on the flashcart sd? Where would I load the files and cheats? Also I'm interested in setting up and using FTP between my windows 7 PC and the 3ds. I've searched and can't find exactly what I'm looking for and it doesn't help that I don't fully understand the nomenclature. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks..

I'm not exactly sure where you put the cheats, but DeadSkullzJr's Cheat Database is what you'll want to use for DS games.
My hope is that I can play DS,
well yeah, that's the whole point of a DS flashcart, at the very least Wood R4 supports cheats (but idk about any other kernels)
You could, but it would be better to use a 3DS-mode emu like Bubble2k16's VirtuaNES for full resolution. It seems to support cheats too.
and SNES off the flashcart
You can, but... don't. Bubble2k16's SNES9x works so much better that there is no reason to use the DS-mode snes emu (which is very old, doesn't run that great, and doesn't have great compatibility compared to snes9x), and it also seems to support cheats.

Hi,

Thanks for response. I've been trying to get cheat codes to work in the virtuanes with no luck. I'm saving a game genie code like below to notepad and changing extension to .CHX then saving to rom folder. Virtuanes doesn't see the cheat. What am I doing wrong?

See examples #1 (NES) and #2 (SNES).

Example
  • sdmc:/roms/nes/Super Mario Bros.nes
  • sdmc:/roms/nes/Super Mario Bros.chx
Text for the written *.chx file.
Code:
Y,SXIOPO,Infinite lives for both Players

In VirtuaNES, look under the Cheats tabs in bottom screen menu for check marks.

I still don't see the cheats and I've tried this for a few other roms. For metroid I have the code file .chx in the roms/nes folder

Metroid.nes
Metroid.chx

Y,SXSGNVSE,Minimum energy of 30
Y,SZUILUVK,Infinite rockets on pick-up
Y,YAXGVPLA,Extra energy

Not sure what I'm missing here.

Thanks for your help and patience. I was screwing up. I didn't have the files saved properly to the .chx format. I should have disabled "hide file extensions" much earlier in all this.
